Two big wins for Inverleith in Europe and a great result for Gordonians in the Scottish Cup

It was a good day at the office for Inverleith in Puconci today; in their opening game they saw off KPH Raca from Slovakia 5-4, then thumped Slovenians HK Triglav Predanovci 10-0. It sets them up for a huge day tomorrow where they must beat Swiss champions Rotweiss Wettingen to retain the chance of promotion.

INVERLEITH 5 KPH RACA (SLOVAKIA) 4

It was a crucial win – but perhaps too close at the end from an Inverleith perspective.

Stuart Neave, Inverleith`s coach, said: “We controlled the game for three quarters bar a few errors. Became a little ragged in the final quarter but we maintained our discipline to win the game.”

The scoring certainly reflects Neave`s thoughts. Inverleith appeared to be strolling to victory with a seemingly comfortable 4-1 lead, but Raca were far from done and could have sneaked an undeserved draw in the end, but the Scots held firm for the five points on offer.

Inverleith moved into a 2-0 lead by the interval, Alex Wilson opened at a penalty corner to be followed by Patrick Christie from the spot.

It was all going swimmingly well when John Stephen added a third from open play two minutes into the second half.

Although Raca`s Adrian Augustinic pulled one back almost immediately, within a minute Wilson again showed his expertise at the set piece to give Inverleith a 4-1 advantage.

Juraj Bogar gave the Slovakians some hope with their second goal just at the close of the third quarter. With three minutes to go Raca`s coach replace his keeper with an additional outfield player in a bid to rescue the contest.

The gamble almost worked, almost immediately Tomas Vacha pulled the score back to 4-3 – and game on!

But Inverleith were awarded a penalty and Christie converted from the spot for the second time in the game. Bogar did score again for Raca in the dying seconds but by then simply a consolation.

Neave concluded: “On to this evening`s game where I would hope to see more control over the whole game.”

Inverleith suddenly found their lethal touch with a ten goal thumping of the Slovenian champions in their second outing of the day.

The foundation was established in the first quarter with a brace of penalty corner conversions from Patrick Christie. Just before the interval Kyle Taylor added a third from open play.

Then the floodgates opened, it started with a hat-trick of penalty corner strikes from Alex Wilson (2) and then Taylor in the third quarter. The final quarter produced a further four goals – Wilson got his hat-trick, a double from Taylor brought his match tally to four, and double figures came from an open play strike from Stuart Hatton.

SCOTTISH CUP

On Friday evening Uddingston marched into the next round of the Scottish Cup with a 7-1 victory over Clydesdale Western`s third string. McKenzie Bell grabbed a couple while the others came from Emma Worthington, D`Arcy Campbell, Mhairi McGregor, Caterina Neill and Connie Lathe. The Lanarkshire side will now be at home to Edinburgh University in the quarter finals.

Watsonians progressed to the next round with a 4-0 win over Glasgow University, Sarah McKay (2), Sarah Jamieson and Nikki Stobie were on target and now play GHK.

The Glasgow students did have the ball in the net but Lucy Smith`s effort was disallowed. Catriona Humphery, Glasgow`s captain, said: “Overall, Glasgow pushed Watsonians throughout the entire game and played really well but weren`t able to quite capitalise on their attacking chances.”

Pride of place must go to second division Gordonians who caused an upset in the men`s cup by dumping Premiership Kelburne out of the competition with a 4-2 victory, Will Serle scored twice with Peter Serle and Phil Moon also scoring. Sam Hunt scored both of Kelburne`s consolations.

The all-Premiership tie between Western and Dundee Wanderers at Auchenhowie did not take place as the latter called off, at this moment it is not confirmed if this is Covid related or something else.
