Success for Hillhead and Inverleith in the U18 Club Cup

Hillhead were the winners of the U18 Girls’ Club Cup final with a 2-0 win over Watsonians and Inverleith won the boys’ final with a 4-2 victory over Watsonians.

Girls’ Final – Watsonians 0-2 Hillhead

Hillhead were victorious in the U18 Girls’ Club Cup Final with an excellent 2-0 win over Watsonians.

It was a good start for Watsonians with back-to-back penalty corners but some valiant Hillhead defending kept the attacks at bay.

Then Hillhead had an opportunity of their own through a penalty corner but they were unable to get their shot on target.

If the opening quarter was tight the second quarter saw the game become a more open contest with both sides attacking well.

Hillhead took a 1-0 lead through Maria Murio Fernandez right before half time. The ball rebounded in the D and Fernandez was on hand to force the ball over the line.

Watsonians pressed for an equaliser in the third quarter but the Hillhead defence held firm.

In the final quarter Hillhead had a great opportunity on the counter attack to put the game to bed but after rounding the keeper the final effort hit the side netting on the stretch.

Then there was a golden opportunity for a Watsonian equaliser; a one-on-one with the keeper saw the ball well saved and cleared.

In the end it was Hillhead who scored next and it was Millie Hardie who struck the killer blow, slipping the ball under the keeper for 2-0 and a cup final victory.

Boys’ Final – Inverleith 4-2 Watsonians

A superb U18 Boys’ Club Cup final saw Inverleith crowned champions with a 4-2 win over Watsonians.

Watsonians started the match strong and enjoyed good possession of the ball. The first opportunity of the game went to Watsonians through a penalty corner, but the Inverleith defence held firm and dealt with the danger well.

A slick counter attack by the team in purple saw the opening goal. Inverleith took the lead through a low strike by Ollie Wilson across the keeper into the bottom right corner. 1-0.

A succession of penalty corners for Watsonians in the second quarter couldn’t find a net, and as the half grew older Inverleith began to show their quality.

Then right on half time Inverleith went 2-0 ahead when they forced the ball home through Thomas Temperley.

The second half saw the match burst into life with goals flying in left and right.

First, Keir Urquhart struck for Watsonians to pull it back to 2-1. Almost immediately Inverleith scored a third through Harry Arthur to make it 3-1.

Then Watsonians had a penalty corner saved onto the crossbar as the game erupted into action.

A lovely low finish by Callum Young made it 4-1 to Inverleith before Drew Lobb pulled it back to 4-2 right at the end of the third quarter.

The last quarter swung from end-to-end but there were no further goals and Inverleith were crowned U18 Boys’ Club Cup champions for 2022.
