Status quo at the top of the Premiership tables
It`s as you were at the top of the Open/Men`s Premiership after two draws between the leading sides.. However, that has allowed FSEG Clydesdale and Edinburgh University to catch up a little after both were winners on the day.
At Bothwell Castle there were precedents – Uddingston conceded two goals in a match for the first time this season while Western Wildcats were restricted to two goals, also for the first time, in a 2-2 draw.
The first half was a fairly even affair and heading for a goalless conclusion until Hamish Galt fired home a low shot at an overtime penalty corner. But in the third quarter Uddy retaliated and took a 2-1 lead when Finn Halliday levelled from the spot and then Luke Gemmell scored from close range. An upset was on its way…but no – the ever reliable Fraser Moran equalised much to the disappointment to the home crowd. Wildcats pressed for the winner in the final quarter and had a lot of pressure, but no breakthrough…and the points were shared.
The other top table clash between Watsonians and ESM also ended in a draw – but this time no scorers and stalemate.
Edinburgh University roared back to life after a recent sticky spell with an eleven goal crushing of Inverleith. Here there was a hat-trick for Sam Hunt, Keir Robb and Tom Cahalin both got a couple, and the others came from Ollie Wilson, Kyle Flockhart, Jamie Green and Rory Steedman.
FSEG Clydesdale proceeded to consolidate their presence in the top six with a 2-1 win at home to Grove Menzieshill. The goals came late in the contest, Benni Whiteley put the Taysiders ahead but a late double from Luke Bannerman secured the points for the Dale.
Hillhead got their first win of the season in some style – an 8-2 win over Dunfermline Carnegie. Amar Sagoo was top scorer with three while the others came from Sean Horgan, Fraser Ward, Dan Squires, Matt Carder and Tom Cole with Aidan McQuade getting both goals for the Fifers.
Grange picked up their first win of the season after seven games – they got the best of seven goals against Kelburne. Despite the closeness of the score Grange were always in front on the scoresheet. The Edinburgh side romped into a three goal lead through Murray Banks with a penalty corner deflection, a scramble in the circle finished off by Max Bargeton and a penalty corner conversion from Albert Rowling.
But back came the Buddies with goals from Scott Peters at a breakaway and a spot score from Martin McIntosh to bring the score back to 3-2. Just on the interval Grange`s Calum Lothian found the net from the top of the circle to restore his side`s lead to 4-2 at the interval. The only goal of the second half came from a direct penalty corner strike from Kelburne`s Rory Donaldson…but that was it and Grange broke their duck.
Also there was no change at the top of the women`s Premiership either.
Watsonians still hold pole position, two goals from Emily Dark was sufficient to give them a 2-0 win at St Andrews University – they still hold a three point lead over Clydesdale Western, but with a game more played.
Clydesdale were also 2-0 winners on the day at Uddingston, Bronwyn Shields got both of them. So again the status quo.
But GHK continue their recent impressive run with an eight goal win over Hillhead. Here there were two goals each for Sophie Byrne and Lucy Williamson with the others coming from Jo Boyle, Natalya Chase, Robin Robeson and Mackenzie Brown. The Glasgow side now take over third.
Grange move back up the table to fourth after a 4-1 win over Glasgow University…and here the catalyst was Heather Croll with a hat-trick. Jess Ross Martin got the other while Maddie Lumsden got the students` consolation.
Alex Walterson and Olivia Finch were on target for Wildcats as they overcame Gordonians 2-0 at Auchenhowie, and they begin to move up the table from the lower reaches.
