Scotland Women Secure Impressive 2-1 Victory Over Ireland at the FIH Hockey World Cup
Scotland Women were back in action today for their fourth match of the FIH Hockey World Cup, taking on Ireland at the Belfius Hockey Arena with a valuable opportunity to play for ranking classification.
There were hopes Scotland could carry the momentum from Wednesday’s impressive performance against higher-ranked Argentina, where they showed plenty of fight, determination and quality against one of the world’s leading sides.
Scotland made a fast start, with Ellie MacKenzie wasting no time in creating Scotland’s first opportunity of the match. With less than two minutes on the clock she won her side their first penalty corner, although Ireland were able to clear the resulting attempt.
Just one minute later Ireland were back defending the Scottish attack when the women in blue earned their second penalty corner. Amy Costello stepped up but her effort was saved as Scotland continued to apply pressure early on.
Scotland’s dominance continued throughout the opening stages and their third penalty corner arrived in the sixth minute. This time the ball found the roof of the net but there was question surrounding who got the final touch. Ultimately, it was MacKenzie who was credited with the goal as Scotland’s strong opening was rewarded with a 1-0 lead.
Scotland had one more opportunity to add to their advantage before the first break, but a scrambled effort in the circle failed to find the back of the net, leaving Scotland to take their narrow lead into the interval.
Scotland enjoyed over sixty percent of possession in the first half but it was not just in attack they were showing their strength, with the defence repeatedly denying Ireland any real attacking threat.
Halfway through the second quarter, Heather McEwan was involved in a hard collision with an Irish player, with Ireland questioning possible misconduct. After the officials reviewed the incident, Scotland were awarded another penalty corner. However, they were unable to convert the opportunity, meaning they continued with just the one-goal advantage.
Ireland eventually found a way through the Scottish defence just a few minutes before half time, with Emily Kealy getting her side back on level terms. Birch requested Scotland’s referral to be used to check for a possible obstruction in the build-up to the score.
However, there was no clear reason for the goal to be overturned and the decision stood. Scotland therefore lost their referral, and the teams headed into the half-time break all square.
Just five minutes after the restart, Scotland restored their advantage through an impressive piece of link-up play between Scotland captain Sarah Robertson and teammate Charlotte Watson. Robertson produced an expertly precise pass over to Watson who made no mistake as she slapped the ball into the top corner to put Scotland back in front at 2-1.
Ireland were quick to respond, using their referral less than a minute later to ask whether the ball had struck a Scottish foot inside the circle. The video review confirmed that it had, giving Ireland a penalty corner and an immediate opportunity to level the score.
Scotland, however, refused to let the setback unsettle them. They defended the penalty corner and denied Ireland the equaliser, retaining their 2-1 advantage as the game continued.
With four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Scotland earned another penalty corner as they continued to threaten the Irish goal. The Irish goalkeeper reacted quickly, getting fingertips to the ball and deflecting it away to prevent Scotland from extending their lead.
Ireland were then awarded their third penalty corner of the match after Jennifer Eadie was penalised for a tackle. Scotland once again stood firm, with pressure from Eve Pearson helping to force the Irish effort wide and ensuring the score remained 2-1 heading into the final quarter.
The fourth and final quarter was a more even contest, with both teams showing strength in attack and defence, but Scotland held firm to see out a 2-1 victory. It was a strong, impressive and dominant performance from Scotland, who now turn their attention to New Zealand on Monday at 10am, with the match available to watch live on Watch.Hockey or the Channel 4 Sport YouTube channel.
