Scotland women lose to France in Edinburgh despite comeback
Scotland 3-4 France (C. Watson; S. Jamieson; K. Birch / D. Gaspari; E. Verzura; Y. LHopital x2)
Scotland women battled back from three goals down but still lost 4-3 to France at Peffermill.
It was a blistering start to the game for France as they took an early lead. A swift attack down the left resulted in a near post deflection by Delfina Gaspari for 1-0.
It went to 2-0 to France when a delightful combination down the left opened the Scots up for Eve Verzura to score a back post tap-in.
Charlotte Watson, on her 100th cap for Scotland, showed flashes of magic, but it was a first quarter that belonged to the French,
It went to 3-0 in the second quarter through an exceptional passing move that saw Yohanna LHopital lob Jess Buchanan in a lovely finish.
Charlotte Watson quickly pulled one back for Scotland when she pressed to win the ball before slotting it low into the bottom left corner for 3-1.
France almost bagged a fourth early in the second half when they passed their way around the Scottish defence but Verzura shot wide when the goal was gaping, and let Scotland off the hook.
Despite the early scare it would be Scotland to score next. A pass fizzed through the defence was deflected home by Sarah Jamieson for 3-2.
In the final quarter a fierce Amy Costello penalty corner was superbly saved with the leg guards of the goalkeeper as Scotland went hunting for an equaliser.
Then the equaliser finally arrived and it was a penalty corner swept home by Katie Birth that made it 3-3.
Almost immediately France was back in front when LHopital smashed a penalty corner into the bottom left corner for 4-3.
Scotland threw everything at the French in the closing stages but there would be no equaliser and France took the win.
