Scotland women lose to England at the EuroHockey Championships

Scotland lost 5-0 to England in their final pool match of the Women’s EuroHockey Championships in Monchengladbach.

England made a good start to the contest, pressing hard and high, looking to turn Scotland over and cause problems.

Two penalty corner opportunities went the way of England, and the second prompted an excellent diving save, to the right, by Amy Gibson.

Gibson was called into action again as the opening quarter came to an end, and a solid save with her leg guards kept England out.

The opener came early in the second quarter, and it went to England. A prompt counter attack was finished off by Tessa Howard, with a low sliding finish, to make it 1-0.

England were denied by Gibson when they fired at goal with a straight strike from the top of the circle, at a penalty corner, as they went hunting for a second goal.

Then as half time approached, England went 2-0 up through a penalty corner into the bottom right corner by Grace Balsdon.

Midway through the third quarter a turnover allowed Scotland to burst forward through Charlotte Watson, but the danger was eventually snuffed out.

Then, after a good interception by Fiona Burnet, Watson burst through and forced a solid save as the Scots looked to muscle their way back into the game.

Balsdon struck again for England, as the third quarter came to a close, a penalty corner strike found the bottom right corner to make it 3-0 ahead.

The Scots won their first penalty corner early in the final quarter, the ball was switched right to Jenny Eadie, but the England defence closed out the danger.

It would be England who would score again, and they bagged their fourth through a Howard rocket into the roof of the net. 4-0.

Then it went to 5-0 for England when a deflection by Howard in front of Buchanan bagged her a hat-trick, and completed the scoring.
