Scotland Women Edged Out by South Africa in Hard-Fought Encounter

Scotland Women produced a determined display but were unable to hold off a late South Africa comeback, falling to a narrow 3-2 defeat after leading majority of the game.

Scotland largely dominated the first quarter from the opening whistle, with their hard work paying off five minutes before the first break when they were awarded a penalty corner. No score from the first attempt but they are subsequently awarded another chance, and Charlotte Watson sent the ball into the top of the net to give the home side a 1-0 advantage.

Just one minute after the opening goal, a skilled circle entry leads to another penalty corner for the women in blue. An unlucky miss for Amy Costello meant Scotland ended the first period with only the one goal on the scoresheet.

Just thirty seconds after the restart, South Africa struck back through Ntsopa Mokoena, to bring the teams level at 1-1.

A determined team effort gave Scotland one more chance to score before half-time with their fourth penalty corner of the match. Watson stepped up and played the ball to teammate Jennifer Eadie, who fired the ball past the goalkeeper to restore Scotland’s one goal advantage.

Strong defence from both teams throughout the third quarter saw multiple shots at goal denied, leaving the score locked at 2-1 heading into the final fifteen minutes.

End-to-end play allowed Mokoena to claim her second goal of the match, putting Scotland under pressure and levelling the scores with only five minutes left on the clock.

The home side were then dealt a further blow as Ongeziwe Mali found the net to complete South Africa’s comeback. Scotland women were ultimately defeated 3-2, but it was a hard-fought performance for the team, who pushed their opponents all the way to the final whistle.
