Scotland Women Build Momentum with 2-0 Victory Over South Africa Ahead of World Cup

Scotland Women began their two-match home series against South Africa at Peffermill, Edinburgh, in their final preparations before travelling to the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup. Scotland secured a 2-0 victory over the side after goals from McEwan and Costello.

Scotland made a fast and powerful start to the match and spent majority of the opening quarter attacking in the South African half. They received two penalty corners during this time but were unable to convert either opportunity, with the sides ending the first quarter goalless.

Within three minutes of the restart Scotland saw another penalty corner. Amy Costello danced around the South African defenders before slipping a pass off to Heather McEwan, who finished the move by slotting the ball into the back of the net.

However, just a minute after taking a 1-0 lead, Scotland were put on the back foot as Bronwyn Shields was shown a green card.

An impressive burst of speed down the wing and a circle entry from Ellie Mackenzie made Scotland look certain to score, but the ball was cleared away, denying the hosts the chance to extend their lead before the half-time break.

A competitive third quarter saw both teams create multiple scoring opportunities, but neither side could find the breakthrough as Scotland carried their one-goal advantage into the final quarter.

The final quarter was a quieter affair, but with three minutes remaining Scotland were awarded a penalty corner. Costello confidently converted to give the home side a two-goal advantage and seal a 2-0 victory.
