Scotland U21 Women book place in final after second victory in Konya, and results elsewhere
A 2-1 victory for Scotland U21 Women, combined with other results in the pool, has guaranteed the Scots a place in the U21 Women’s EuroHockey Championship II final. The Scots play Turkey in their final pool game looking to keep momentum ahead of the final.
Like the previous match, Scotland started well, winning lots of the ball with screens Ava Wadsworth; Ava Findlay; and Connie Roxburgh taking a grip of the game in midfield.
The Scots fashioned some early chances but weren’t able to apply a finish that the dominant opening to the game deserved.
Then the sucker punch as Poland broke forward and Hanna Wochna opened the scoring by rounding the keeper and slotting home after the ball was blasted, and deflected, in the Scottish circle.
The goal didn’t dent the Scots however, and one minute later, Scotland was level. A penalty corner strike by Wadsworth was deflected into the net by Mhairi Low to make it 1-1.
At the start of the second quarter, Scotland went in front through a sublime team goal. A flowing move that saw Katie Brett; Cat Nelli; and Ava Findlay combine was finished off by Findlay with a powerful low smash for 2-1.
Scotland dominated the second half, and other than dealing with a couple of counter attacks, looked comfortable and could have scored more.
Neave Halliday was a rock at the back and moved the ball well, while Zara Kennedy and Ava Smith delivered multiple ball wins to keep Scotland in attacking areas.
There would be no further goals, and now Scotland look forward to facing the hosts, Turkey, to complete their pool before taking their place in the final.
