Scotland take on Europe’s elite in Junior Nations Championship
Scotland U21 Men will face the most challenging test of their
summer programme when they compete in the EuroHockey Junior Nations
Championship in Den Bosch, Netherlands.
The week-long competition runs from 26th August-1st September and
features eight of Europe’s top junior international sides. The
Scots will play in Pool B against Belgium, Spain and Germany, while
the Netherlands, England, France and Wales make up Pool A.
The target for Scotland is to retain their place in the top
division of the European championship and Scotland U21 Head Coach
Graham Moodie emphasised the challenge ahead,
“No Scottish team has retained their place in the top division
since 2002 so we’re well aware of the task that faces the squad.
For a number of our players, this is their first taste of elite
level European competition, but guys like Alan Forsyth and Michael
Bremner also bring experience from playing with the senior side,
which is invaluable. Our biggest strengths will be our team work
rate and discipline. We are a fit, well organised team and very
capable of creating opportunities.”
The European competition is the culmination of a busy summer
programme for Moodie’s side, which started out with participation
in the Great Britain Super League in April. Following the Celtic
Cup in June, the Scots tested themselves against Spain and three of
Germany’s leading clubs before preparing for their biggest test
against Europe’s junior elite.
“We’ve worked really hard over the last few months to focus on
fitness and good organisation against the top teams”, continued
Moodie. “The squad has made a huge amount of progress over the
summer and they have worked extremely hard. If we play to our
potential in this tournament I believe we will give ourselves a
great chance of achieving our goal.”
Scotland U21 Men: Tom O’Kelly, Stuart Allan (both AAM Gordonians),
Peter Baldwin, Aidan Black, Scott Lindsay (all Clydesdale), Alan
Forsyth, Michael Bremner, Lee Morton, Ed Greaves (all Glynhill
Hotel Kelburne), Fraser Sands, Matthew Connor, Adam Walker, Hamish
Imrie (all Grange), Sean Hadfield (CALA Edinburgh), Chris Duncan,
Ross Jamieson (both Inverleith), Alisdair Irvine (Grove
Menzieshill), Ben Peterson (VMHM Pollux Vlaardingse
Rotterdam).
