Scotland Men Claim Victory Over Chile for the Second Time in the Saltire Series

A final quarter goal for Scotland sees the men make it two wins from two against a strong Chilean side.

Scotland Men faced Chile in the second of three home internationals at Peffermill, Edinburgh, as the Saltire Series continues in the Scottish capital. The Blue Sticks looked to continue on from yesterday’s strong performance where they secured a 3-0 victory over the visiting side.

The Scots made an impressive start to the game and took the opportunity for a shot at goal within the opening two minutes, but Keir Robb’s shot unfortunately went wide.

The opportunities for Scotland to open the scoring kept coming however as the team were awarded three penalty corners one after the other but none of the attempts were converted and both sides went into the first break yet to score.

Chile made their first attacking threat early in the second quarter, but a strong Scottish defence denied a penalty corner score. Scotland continued the quarter on the back foot as Jamie Golden was shown a green card, but the home side remained disciplined in both attack and defence.

With only fifty seconds left on the clock in Q2 Scotland were awarded a penalty corner and an error from the Chilean side resulted in a second but Andrew McConnel’s shot skimmed the top of the goal and the teams went into the half-time break still deadlocked.

With eight minutes left on the clock in Q3 Chile were shown a yellow card which resulted in a crucial penalty corner for Scotland but a well deflected ball by the Chilean goalkeeper denied what looked like a sure goal.

An impressive show of skill from Lee Morton gifted Scotland yet another penalty corner, no score on the first attempt but a second chance is awarded, and Scotland finally found the back of the net through Tommy Orr to take a hard fought 1-0 lead with less than ten minutes left in the game.

Both sides started the final minutes a man down after being shown green cards, Scotland’s Ali Richmond is the penalised player.

A dramatic final minute sees Chile awarded a penalty corner but impeccable defence from McConnel sees Scotland retain their lead and secure a 1-0 victory.
