Scotland Defeat Korea 4-2 in Crucial Nations Cup Clash
Scotland keep their FIH Nations Cup campaign alive with an impressive 4-2 victory over Korea in Cape Town, securing three crucial points thanks to goals from Jamie Golden (2), Euan Gilmour and Cammy Golden.
Scotland faced Korea in their last pool match at the FIH Men’s Nations Cup in Cape Town, knowing that a win was required to keep their hopes of progression alive.
After having produced several strong performances throughout the tournament, Scotland’s focus was on delivering a complete performance across all four quarters. The squad entered the match determined to take on every opportunity that came their way.
Scotland were confident that by remaining disciplined, staying in the contest for the full 60 minutes and managing Korea’s attacking threat, they could secure the result needed.
Scotland made the perfect start to the game when they won a penalty corner with nine minutes remaining in the first quarter. Jamie Golden made no mistakes, finding the back of the net to give Scotland a dream start and a 1-0 lead.
Korea responded by earning a penalty corner of their own, but Scotland goalkeeper Tommy Alexander produced an important save, allowing his side to carry their 1-0 lead into the first break.
The second quarter saw Korea consistent in their pursuit of an equaliser. Their persistence paid off five minutes into the quarter when Gangsan Lee’s shot at goal was successful, levelling the scores at 1-1.
A brilliant Scottish defensive intervention late in the quarter denied Korea what looked to be a another goalscoring opportunity, ensuring the sides remained level at 1-1 heading into the half-time interval.
Scotland came out for the third quarter strongly and quickly regained their advantage. Korea were caught napping as Euan Gilmour scored to restore Scotland’s lead and make it 2-1.
Korea’s Jaewon Sim went on to receive a green card and Scotland were rewarded with a penalty corner with five minutes remaining in the quarter as a result. Golden stepped up and scored his second goal of the match to extend Scotland’s lead to 3-1.
Scotland earned another penalty corner shortly after, although this time they were unable to add to their tally. Nevertheless, they headed into the final quarter with a two-goal advantage.
The final quarter saw James Croll receive a green card early on, but Scotland remained in control despite being a man-down. Another penalty corner presented an opportunity to increase the lead further, however Korea defended well to deny the Scots.
With Korea searching for a way back into the match, Alexander produced yet another excellent save to maintain Scotland’s lead with just seven minutes remaining.
That save proved crucial as Scotland soon struck again with Cammy Golden finding the net to put Scotland 4-1 ahead and firmly in control of the contest.
Korea managed to pull a goal back late on through Cheoleon, reducing the deficit to 4-2, but Scotland comfortably saw out the closing stages to secure an important victory.
The 4-2 win earned Scotland three valuable points and ensured their FIH Nations Cup campaign remains alive. Scotland will now have the opportunity to go again on Friday 19th June in a placing match, with their opponents yet to be confirmed.
