Sarah Wilson wins FIH Umpire of the Year
Scottish umpire Sarah Wilson has won the prestigious 2024 Umpire of the Year Award at the FIH Stars Awards in Muscat, Oman.
It is a spectacular success for Sarah after yet another tremendous year flying the flag for Scotland, and Scotland’s umpiring community.
It’s also a second accomplishment at the FIH Stars Awards for Wilson who was awarded the FIH Female Umpire of the Year Award, following the Olympics in Rio.
The award comes in the year that Sarah umpired at her third Olympics at the Games in Paris, and was appointed to the gold medal match to top off an exceptional performance at the tournament.
Also, at the recent EHL Championships Sarah Wilson umpired the final.
This award is the latest of a long line of achievements for one of Scotland’s most decorated umpires. At the Tokyo Olympics Sarah umpired the Women’s gold medal final between The Netherlands and Argentina.
In 2016 in Rio Sarah umpired a number of critical matches, including the bronze medal match.
Sarah made her Commonwealth Games debut at Glasgow 2014, where she umpired both the semi-final and the bronze medal matches.
Then at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018, Sarah umpired both the semi-final and the final between New Zealand and Australia.
Sarah has umpired numerous EuroHockey Championships finals as well as domestic finals over many successful years.
Amongst her many accolades Sarah was awarded the sport’s ‘golden whistle’ in 2019 to commemorate her 100th international cap.
Sarah’s success comes on the back of years of hard work and commitment to achieve her ambitions, and winning this award further cements Scotland’s status as producing some of the best officials in world hockey.
