Relegation for Wanderers
EUROHOCKEY INDOOR CLUB CUP (WOMEN) –
VIENNA
VWS Dundee Wanderers finally bowed out of the European
Indoor Club Cup in Vienna when they lost 4-2 to Austrian champions
SV Arminen in their final match in the relegation pool. The
Taysiders finished in eighth place and so next season Grove
Menzieshill will play in the lower Trophy event.
The Scots needed to score an avalanche of goals to have any
chance of avoiding the drop, but the goals failed to come and
goalkeeper Carmin Dow was forced into four saves to keep the
scoresheet blank. In 11 minutes Wanderers took the lead
through a penalty corner strike from Julie Bryce. But
the Dundonians failed to capitalise and Arminen were level by the
interval.
The Austrians then powered into a 4-1 lead after the interval
before Sam Sangster pulled one back from another set piece.
Once again, coach Dave Stott resorted to taking off keeper Carmin
Dow in a bid to rescue the game, but the plan failed to produce
further goals although Sangster hit the bar twice in the closing
action.
