Late strike for Grange
Grange came back from the dead to see off Grove Menzieshill 4-3
in the Subway national league at Peffermill with the winning goal
coming from Cammie Fraser with three minutes to go. The
first half ended 1-1, Mike Ross scored for the Taysiders and Colin
McIver fired a first time shot just on the interval following
a quick free hit
Menzieshill seemed to have a winning position with further
strikes by Gavin Tomlinson from a set piece and Ross McPherson
after good build-up work from Gavin Byers. But Grange were
not to be denied, Martin Kelly made it 3-2 when he picked up the
ball in the circle and rounded the keeper, and then Phil Sully
brought the scores back level from close in after and pull-back by
Duncan Batchelor. That left Fraser to secure the three points
when he forced home a rebound from under the keeper after McIver`s
initial shot had been blocked.
Inverleith kept their perfect record with a 2-0 win over Greaves
Clydesdale at Peffermill. The opener came midway through the
first half, John Harris made the running up the left and his
cut-back was fired home by Derek Salmond. Further chances
fell to Harris and Chris Bird, but no further goals by the
interval. Inverleith`s second again involved Harris, this time his
cut-back was walked into the net by Bird. An interesting
statistic that may sum up Clydesdale`s woes, they had seven penalty
corners to Inverleith`s none, and yet the Edinburgh side took the
points.
Glynhill Kelburne retained pole position in the Subway national
league with a 4-1 win over an improving AMN Hillhead.
The Glasgow side took a surprise lead through Paul Crooks, only for
Willie Marshall to equalise before the interval. Alan Forsyth
put the Paisley outfit in front after Jonny Christie`s initial shot
was blocked, Forsyth made it 3-1 when he flipped the ball past the
keeper, and Michael Christie completed the scoring for
Kelburne.
A hat-trick by Douglas Simpson was the catalyst in Western
Wildcats 4-2 win over CALA Edinburgh at Meggetland. CALA had
a mountain to climb when Simpson put his side two up in only ten
minutes. Then veteran defender Euan Miller seemed to put the
result beyond doubt with a third goal following a penalty corner
breakdown. But back came the home side, Phil Rae made it 3-1
and 15 year old Angus Robb pulled another goal back on the
interval.
CALA had a lot of the pressure in the second half, but the
result was finally sealed with 12 minutes to go when Simpson scored
his third in a breakaway situation.
Grove Menzieshill move top of the women`s league with a 7-0
whipping of CALA Edinburgh. All the goals came from penalty
corners, Louise Carroll (2), Linda Clement (2), Louise Baxter,
Leigh Fawcett and Ali Bell.
Giffnock got back to a winning way with a 6-1 trouncing of newly
promoted GHK, former Olympian Rhona Simpson bagged four while
internationalist Kareena Marshall got the other two. Simpson
opened with a high shot but GHK equalised when Maisie Morris was
left with plenty of space in the circle. Just on the interval
Simpson deftly touched home a shot from the top of the circle for a
2-1 lead for Giffnock.
In the second half a Simpson run and shot was only partly
stopped by the GHK keeper but the ball still nestled in the net for
3-1, the former Olympian made it four with a well executed
volley. The remaining goals came from Marshall, her first was
a tap in following a Simpson great solo run while the sixth came
from a strike from the top of the circle.
VWS Dundee Wanderers fought out a 2-2 draw with Kelburne, Louise
Sheriff and Heather Elder scored for the Taysiders while Amanda
Maxwell and Kate Longbottom were on target for the Paisley
side.
In the final game Grange and Western Wildcats fought out a
goalless draw.
