Kelburne tighten grip at the top
Glynhill Hotel Kelburne responded to the challenge of second
placed Grange with a 5-0 win to further tighten their grip on the
Subway National League today at Peffermill.
Straight from the start Kelburne made their intentions clear
when Gareth Hall struck the woodwork but Josh Cairns fired the
Paisley side ahead in ten minutes with a powerful drag flick.
Midway through the half Grange had the opportunity to equalise
but keeper Mark Fulton produced a fine save to deny Rob Barr from
the spot. The home side fell further behind before the interval
when following a great run from Ross McIntyre, Michael Bremner
scored with a powerful shot from the top of the circle.
Once again Kelburne struck early on the resumption when
excellent work from Chris Nelson set up Gareth Hall to leave the
home side facing an even more difficult task. Grange tried hard to
make inroads but Kelburne’s defence remained firm and after Grange
failed to clear their lines, Jonny Christie sent a great shot past
the helpless keeper.
Christie then added his second to put the gloss on a fine result
with minutes remaining to leave Kelburne eight points clear in the
title race. Manager Harry Coles was naturally delighted commenting
“This was a first class all round performance both from an
attacking point of view but also defensively when we had to deal
with Grange pressure.”
Western Wildcats continued their rich vein of form with a
comfortable 7-1 away win over an AMN Hillhead team beginning to
become a little detached in second bottom place. The Wildcats goals
came from the inform pair of Scott McCartney (3) and Douglas
Simpson (2) with Rhury Smith and Steven Percy finishing off the
Auchenhowie goal spree. Euan Campbell netting the home side’s
consolation. This result moves the Wildcats into third spot two
points behind Grange.
Grove Menzieshill game out on top in the Dundee derby with 4-1
win over their old rival VWS Dundee Wanderers at Riverside Park.
Chris Wilson gave the visitors the lead after a Wanderers set piece
breakdown which led to a Menzieshill lightening breakaway.
Ross McPherson doubled the advantage before the break. However
Wanderers hit back when Ross McGlashan was on hand at the back post
to finish off a well constructed attack. Any comeback hopes were
dashed with further Menzieshill goals from Gavin Byers and Michael
Ross giving them a third consecutive win and keeping them moving
upwards.
Coach Gordon Shepherd was a happier man having watched his
Greaves Clydesdale team manage to hold on to a lead this week and
run out 4-0 winners over CALA Edinburgh at Titwood. First half
goals from Ben Peterson and Gordon Munro gave the home side a
deserved lead on the balance of play.
CALA came back strongly and Stuart Brown in the Clydesdale goal
was called on to make several important saves as the visitors
attempted to force their way back into the game. However a well
worked set piece from the Titwood side put them further ahead with
Steven McKnight settling any nerves and Peterson added the fourth
near the end.
Finally there was an entertaining game at Peffermill which saw
Edinburgh University and Inveleith share the spoils in a keenly
contested game which ended two apiece. The scorers for the home
side were Tom Kemsley and Callum Duke. The visitors goals coming
from Adam McKenzie and Andrew Johnston.
