Kelburne on the verge
SUBWAY NATIONAL LEAGUE (MEN)
Glynhill Kelburne`s relentless march to their eighth
consecutive Subway national league title showed no mercy to second
bottom CALA Edinburgh with a 13-0 defeat at
Bellahouston.
The avalanche started in only five minutes when Michael Christie
hammered home a rebound from a set piece. The scoring
continued unabated from there, Alan Forsyth (4), Jonny Christie
(3), Ross McIntyre (2) were the main men on target for the Paisley
side.
In the battle for second spot and a place in Europe next season,
Grange took the initiative with a convincing 4-0 win over Edinburgh
rivals Inverleith. There was only one goal in the first half,
Fraser Sands` penalty corner shot went in off the goalkeeper.
A bizarre goal early in the second half put Grange two up, Sands`
set piece shot was blocked, but the ball rebounded off the leg of
umpire John Heron straight to Andrew Brogdon who promptly scored
with a first time shot. As Inverleith pressed to get back
into the game, Matt Connor took advantage of two breakaways to
complete the Grange scoring.
Western Wildcats` bid for second spot effectively foundered on
being held to a 3-3 draw by Greaves Clydesdale at
Auchenhowie.
The first half was eminently forgettable with few chances to
either side, Peter Baldwin and Ciaran Crawford from a penalty
corner were closest for Clydesdale, for the Wildcats Gary Maitles
hit a post and Scott McCartney`s penalty corner was blocked.
Seven minutes after the interval Western took the lead, at a
penalty corner McCartney`s flick was touched over the line by Joe
Simpson. Back came the visitors, an Allan Law through ball
found Raymond Wrightson alone in the circle and he deftly diverted
the ball past Gavin Sommerville in the Western goal for the
equaliser. Minutes later Wrightson was the victim of a stick
chop and Ciaran Crawford converted from the spot to put Clydesdale
2-1 ahead.
In this ding-dong affair, it was the Wildcats` turn to claw
themselves into a 3-2 lead, Steven Percy levelled from a narrow
angle into the roof of the net after the keeper seemed to think the
ball was going out, and this was followed quickly by McCartney from
a penalty. With time running out and Wildcats` Gary Maitles
in the sin bin, Wrightson equalised for Clydesdale with a fierce
reverse stick shot while the Western defence were in some
disarray.
AMN Hillhead have put further distance between themselves and
CALA in the fight to avoid the relegation play-off spot with a 5-4
win over bottom side VWS Dundee Wanderers who are now officially in
division two next season. It was 2-2 at the interval, Graeme
Campbell and Ryan Bell were on target for the Glasgow side while
Ross Glashan and Bobby Ralph replied for the Taysiders. It
was a ding-dong second half, with five minutes left the score was
level at 4-4, Wei Adams and Andrew Hilton from a penalty added
goals for Hillhead and Rory Taylor and Glashan again were on target
for Wanderers. But with two minutes remaining Bell got his
second to claim the valuable three points for Hillhead in their
survival campaign.
Finally, Grove Menzieshill confirmed fifth place with a 4-0m win
over Edinburgh University, Chris Wilson scored twice and the other
goals came from Ollie James and Craig Falconer.
