Junior Schools Cup 2025 serves up action-packed finals

Junior Boys’ Cup – Merchiston 0-1 Stewart’s Melville College

Stewart’s Melville College won a nailbiting Junior Boys’ Cup final with a 1-0 victory over Merchiston at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

Stewart’s Melville College nearly opened the scoring when James Carter smashed the left upright with a low penalty corner strike.

It was another penalty corner opportunity for Stewart’s Melville College that created the next opportunity of the match when Alexander Tait deflected over the bar.

The opener came soon enough and Stewart’s Melville College took the lead when Carter blasted home for 1-0.

A powerful penalty corner effort early in the second half almost resulted in a second goal for Stewart’s Melville College but Angus Jamieson in goal was a match to it with a solid save.

Merchiston then fashioned a great opportunity to equalise but Toby Grant’s effort went narrowly wide of the left post.

The game’s finale saw Merchiston camp in the Stewart’s Melville College half, taking advantage of an extra outfield player after removing the goalkeeper, but they couldn’t find an equaliser and it was victory to Stewart’s Melville College.

Junior Girls’ Cup – Strathallan 1-1(2-3) Edinburgh Academy

After a close 1-1 draw Edinburgh Academy won the Junior Girls’ Cup with a 3-2 shootout victory at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

It was a very even opening to the final with both sides tactically aware and working each other out. The first opportunity went to Edinburgh Academy with a penalty corner attempt that fizzed over bar.

The match continued to be very close without any clear chances for goals until half time.

Early in the second half Edinburgh Academy won the game’s second corner opportunity, and Sadie Shaw’s low effort zipped just wide of the left post.

A short time later and it was Strathallan’s turn to have a corner opportunity but their three pass movement was booted clear by Carmen McDonald in goal for Academy.

The game’s opening goal finally arrived and it went to Strathallan. Sophie Dick surged forward down the left and slid a low shot across goal into the bottom right corner for 1-0.

Almost immediately Edinburgh Academy equalised and it was Abigail Orr who converted a rebound off the goalkeeper to make it 1-1.

A tense close to the game couldn’t find a winning goal and a shootout was required to settle the contest. The shootout was equally tense and it was Tilly Yeomans who provided the winning strike to win Edinburgh Academy the cup.

Junior Girls’ Challenge Cup – Kelso High School 1-3 St Aloysius College

St Aloysius won their first ever Junior Schools’ Cup finals day appearance with a 3-1 win over Kelso High School in the Junior Girls’ Challenge Cup.

It was a great start to the contest for Kelso as they grabbed an early goal. The schools’ first attack resulted in a penalty corner; an opportunity that Zoe White was only too happy to take with a low smash into the bottom left corner for 1-0.

The opening goal sparked St Aloysius into life and they set about hunting down an equaliser. When the equaliser arrived it was a clinical finish by Kate Mulgrew that levelled the scores at 1-1.

Fuelled by the strike St Aloysius soon found the net again. A slick counter attack saw Olivia Bradley run through on goal and lovely low finish saw the ball slip past the keeper and into the bottom right corner for 2-1.

The second half was fast and furious and cheered on by a large and enthusiastic crowd.

A low and hard penalty corner strike saw St Aloysius further their advantage with team captain Brie D’Andrea grabbing the goal. 3-1.

A late Kelso surge couldn’t bring any goals and St Aloysius won the cup at their first attempt.

Junior Girls’ Plate – High School of Dundee 0-5 Dollar Academy

A sensational 5-0 victory saw Dollar Academy lift the Junior Girls’ Plate at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

It was a fast start to the contest from both sides but it was Dollar who struck first. Annabelle Keatch opened the scoring with a lovely low finish from the right of goal to make it 1-0.

Dollar soon doubled their lead after Sophie Adamson forced the ball home after a good effort from Imogen Morrison was saved. 2-0.

High School of Dundee came knocking at the Dollar door and a couple of penalty corner efforts came close to finding the net.

Then Holly Duff came agonisingly close to finding the net for the Dundee side with an overhead connection from a hard pass across goal.

Early in the second half Dollar was on a mission to seal the game with a third goal. It was Adamson who would provide the cushion when she finished a well-worked passing move with a far post tap-in for 3-0.

The third goal quickly sparked a fourth and it was Adamson again who surged forward on a counter and sunk the ball into the bottom right corner for 4-0. Then another swift counter from Dollar saw the ball squeezed home for a fifth goal. 5-0, and a great victory to lift the trophy.

Junior Boys’ Plate – Fettes College 2-1 Jordanhill

Fettes College won the Junior Boys’ Plate with a 2-1 victory over Jordanhill at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

Kaze Cordero posed the first threat of the match with an energetic run into the circle, winning a penalty corner, but Felix Usher crashed the corner effort over the bar.

The opener would come soon enough and it was Cordero who crashed the ball inti the bottom right corner for 1-0.

It went to 2-0 a short time later when a pile of white jersey’s surged in on the Jordanhill goal, forcing the ball home for 2-0.

Jordanhill battled back and got a deserved goal before half time when Hamish Meikle swept home from close range to make it 2-1 at the break.

The second half raged from end to end with both sides looking dangerous and playing attacking hockey, but there would be no further goal and the victory went to Fettes College.
