Inverleith retains Scotland’s men’s EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy place

Inverleith won a dramatic final game to retain Scotland’s place in the men’s EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy.

It was a tough opening game for Inverleith, losing 7-5 in their opening match against Slagelse HC of Denmark. The team got off to a great start, Captain Derek Salmond giving the Scots the lead in the second minute of the game. The Danes struck back quickly through Masthias Due Tankmar, before taking the lead in the ninth minute through Mads Neilsen.

Lasse Steinmentz Christensen then struck a double to put Inverleith 4-1 down before Fabian Wolski pulled one back to make it 4-2. Another two goals just before half time gave the Scots a tough 6-2 score line to claw back.

Matters were made worse just after half time when Mikkel Steinmetz Christensen put Slagelse 7-2 up. Inverleith battled hard for the rest of the game, with goals coming from Stuart Hatton, Stephen Dick, and Aedan McCrossan to make a final score of 7-5 to Slagelse.

Next up for Inverleith was HC Rotweiss Wettingen of Switzerland and it was another tough encounter for the Scots. They found themselves 3-1 down at half time with goals coming from Nicolas Steffen, Michel Morard, and Benjamin Messerli before Derek Salmond pulled one back for the Scots. Three second half goals from Manuel Keller, a second for Steffen, and Silvan Steimer made up a final score of 6-1.

Inverleith opened up day two with a big win. Atletico Clube de Portugal were the opponents and it was the Portuguese who got off to the better start, taking a two-goal lead. Inverleith then struck three goals before half time, the strikes coming from Stuart Hatton, and a Stephen Dick double. The Portuguese levelled the score after half time, Joao Penetra the scorer, before Kyle Taylor restored Inverleith’s lead to make it 4-3.

Luis Tavares led the charge for Atletico Clube de Portugal, scoring in the 34th minute, before Derek Salmond hit the net for Inverleith, and Adam MacKenzie put the game to bed just on full time. A big 6-4 victory for the Scots.

A brave performance against Hockey Klub Zelina saw the Scots lose 3-2. The game was all square until the Croatians struck two before half time through Aleksandr Lykov. Stephen Dick pulled one back for Inverleith just after half time. Toni Premilovac made it 3-1 with five minutes remaining but Fabian Wolski struck back instantly for Inverleith. The minutes ticked away and the Scots were unable to find an equaliser.

It all came down to the final game against HC Bohemians Prague to find out who would retain a place in the trophy for 2018, and Inverleith didn’t disappoint.

Derek Salmond replied instantly for the Scots after the Czechs took an early lead, then Stephen Dick put Inverleith in front.

Then in a five minute goal spree just before half time, Fabian Wolski bagged a goal before Salmond struck two to complete his hat-trick and give Inverleith a 5-1 half time lead. The side from Prague put up a spirited fightback in the second half, scoring through Ales Perinka, and a double for Filip Kucera, but it was not enough to spoil Inverleith’s day as they held on to win 5-4.

The result means Inverleith successfully retained Scotland’s place in the EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy.
