MEN
Inverleith once again got the better of rivals Menzieshill and won the final by 6-3 to take the gold medal.
The Edinburgh side opened brightly and took an early two goal lead through Chris Grassick and Craig Sinclair. There followed a flurry of goals in the space of two minutes, Ben Cromar pulled one back for the Taysiders, Derek Salmond made it 3-1 for the Edinburgh side, and then Cromar scored again for 3-2, and that was the score at the interval.
Gavin Byers gave Menzieshill a glimmer of hope with an equaliser five minutes into the second half, but then Grassick from the spot, a Salmond deft scoop over the goalkeeper, and finally Ross Jamieson with an open goal in the last seconds sealed the result and the gold medal for Inverleith.
In their opening match this morning Menzieshill were almost the victim of a shock, at half-time they trailed Scotland under 21 squad by 4-2, but recovered sufficiently to take the match 7-5 in the end. A first half hat-trick from PSL Team Sport Clydesdale`s Scott Lindsay was the catalyst in the Scots youngsters interval lead, the other strike came from Andrew Campbell of Edinburgh University.
But four goals from Menzieshill captain Chris Wilson in six minutes either side of the break put the Scottish champions back on the winning trail. The Taysiders` other goals came from Allan Law, Gavin Byers and Craig Falconer, Dundee Wanderers` Fergus Sandison notched a consolation for the youngsters.
Inverleith made their way to the final with a 3-2 win over Edinburgh rivals Grange, but the league leaders left it late. Grange led at the interval with a sixth minute goal from Fraser Sands. There was no further scoring until three minutes from the end when Derek Salmond equalised for Inverleith. Grange seemed to have booked their ticket to the final when Sands again made it 2-1 a minute later. But in a final flourish Chris Bird and then Salmond scored two goals in the closing seconds for a last-ditch victory.
Grange finished the tournament on the wrong end of a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Scotland under 21 squad who consequently finished in third place. Although it was only 1-1 at the interval, the Scots youngsters then found their shooting boots, there were doubles for the PSL Clydesdale pair of Scott Lindsay and Mike McKenzie while the other goals came from Fergus Sandison and Andrew Campbell.
WOMEN
Grove took the gold medal with a 5-3 win over city rivals Dundee Wanderers in the final. Louise Baxter gave Grove a two goal lead in the first half but Sam Sangster pulled one back for Wanderers. Then Carmin Dow, Wanderers` goalkeeper, had to look lively at a Louise Carroll penalty corner to keep her side in the game before the interval.
Direct from the push-back Baxter completed her hat-trick to put Grove 3-1 ahead, but again Sangster came to Wanderers rescue with a penalty corner strike for 3-2. Heather Elder had the ball in the net but the “goal” was disallowed as the shot came from outside the circle. Sarah Jamieson made it 4-2 for Grove when she rounded Dow and put the ball into the empty net, but once again Sangster converted a set piece for 4-3 and her own hat-trick. In an effort to save the game Wanderers replaced Dow with an additional outfield player, but the gamble failed as Jamieson sealed the result with a breakaway fifth goal.
Scotland juniors took the bronze medal with a 4-3 win over first division side Granite City Wanderers.
Scotland`s under 21 squad provided a bit of an upset by beating Grove 2-1 in their final pool match, but the Scottish champions still made it to the final. The Scots youngsters went ahead through Jenny Eadie and then seemed to have things sewn up when Heather Lang doubled the score with six minutes left. Louise Campbell pulled one back for Grove near the end, but the juniors held out for a famous victory.
No such trouble for Dundee Wanderers who beat Granite City 15-0, Jenny Gerrard was the top scorer with a nap hand.
