Honours even between Watsonians and Clydesdale in Women’s Indoor National League 1
The day opened with a 1-1 draw in the Tayside derby between Grove Menzieshill and Dundee Wanderers – and that gave the former their first point of the season so far.
Grove Menzieshill opened with a penalty corner strike from Emma Tennant in only four minutes. And that is how the score stood until the final minute when Lucy Williamson levelled, again at a penalty corner.
A 1-1 draw was also the result in the all-Edinburgh clash between Inverleith and CALA. Stella Hunger opened the scoring for Inverleith just before half-time but that was cancelled out by CALA`s Angie Davie.
And now the big one for pole position between Watsonians and Clydesdale Western. On a day of low scoring the top of the table clash also fulfilled that requirement with the contest goalless at the interval.
Four minutes into the second half Sarah Jamieson broke the goalless deadlock with an open play strike for Watsonians. Back came Clydesdale and they scored two penalty corners in three minutes to take a 2-1 lead, the first from Millie Steiger and then Margery Justice. But with five minutes remaining the Edinburgh side were level at yet another penalty corner buried this time by Emily Dark…and that is how it ended.
As a result both sides are level on 16 points, but Watsonians shade it with a better goal difference.
Western Wildcats moved to within four points of the leaders with a comfortable 5-1 win over Dundee Wanderers. The Cats went two up early in the first half through Rachel Osborne and Olivia Finch although the Taysiders pulled one back through Isla McRobbie to reduce the lead to a single goal.
However, the Auchenhowie side put their foot on the gas and scored three more without reply through Alex Stuart at a set piece, Zara Kennedy and Corrie Hay.
Grove Menzieshill advanced their cause further with their first win of the campaign – a 1-0 win over Edinburgh University, Jamie Lyon was the sole player on target.
Clydesdale certainly did not hang around in their second game against Inverleith with a magnificent seven without reply. The game was effectively over in nine minutes with goals from Bronwyn Shields, Margery Justice and Francis Lonergan. Anna Hoolaghan added a fourth just on the interval. Goals continued to flow in the second half through Lonergan and Hoolaghan again along with Millie Steiger.
Watsonians greatly increased their goal difference advantage over Clydesdale with a massive 16-2 win over Edinburgh CALA, there were four goals each for Sarah Jamieson and Katie Stott, Katherine Holdgate and Emily Dark both got hat-tricks while Mairi Drummond scored two. Mention should be made of CALA`s Amy Jane Russell and Emma Davie who scored the consolations.
Western Wildcats remain four points behind the leaders after 5-0 win over Edinburgh University – a good day for the Cats. They were three goals up at the interval, Olivia Finch scored twice and then Rachel Osborne found the net at a penalty corner. The Cats added another two in the second half through Corrie Hay and Osborne again.
In the final match of a long day Inverleith stayed the course to move up to fourth in the table with a 2-1 win over Grove Menzieshill. After a goalless first half the Edinburgh side took the lead through Jenn Tait. Six minutes later Grove`s Martha Baldwin levelled, and another draw seemed on the cards but at the death Jenn Tait secured the three points with a penalty corner conversion.
