Hillhead dump Grange out of the Scottish Cup but Western Wildcats and Edinburgh University progress
The day started with a big result – Hillhead dumped Grange out of the men’s Scottish Cup. In the preview Hillhead coach Yan Adams prophetically said: “cups can be funny things, so we`d like to make things hard for them (Grange).” And how right he was.
Certainly Grange were not the force they were on Saturday against Western but all credit to Hillhead as they stuck to their task and took the lead through Matt Carder in the third quarter. And just as they thought the tie was won in normal time Dylan Bean came up with a last minute penalty corner strike for the equaliser. You might think that would have knocked the stuffing out of Hillhead…but not so, they went on to win the tie 11-10 on penalty strokes. Grange`s final attempt was saved by the Hillhead keeper. Bizarrely both teams scored their first eight shoot-out attempts.
No such difficulties for Western Wildcats with an eight goal mauling of Grove Menzieshill – Vishal Marwaha`s pack had clearly recovered from their Saturday doldrums. The contest was well won by the interval with two strikes by Rob Harwood along with Andrew Lochrin, Jamie Golden and Fraser Moran. The second half belonged to Jamie Golden who added a further three to the tally.
Eight was also the figure as Edinburgh had an easy win over Glasgow in the clash of the Varsities at Peffermill. Here Keir Robb was top scorer with four, Iain McFadden got a hat-trick and Tom Cahalin completed the scoring.
Elsewhere, Kelburne beat Highland 9-1 in the men`s cup while in the women`s Orkney were 6-2 winners over Grange`s second string and Watsonians beat their own second string 6-0 to progress in the competition.
