Grove face challenge of Edinburgh University
The game of the day this weekend in the Women’s Aberdeen
Asset Management National League is without doubt the clash between
Grove Menzieshill and Edinburgh University at DISC on
Saturday(16.00.)
Grove have made an impressive start to the season considering
the losses suffered in playing personnel since last season and
passed a major test last weekend when they managed a slender one
goal win over long time rivals Milne Craig Clydesdale Western on
Tayside.
However Edinburgh University have themselves made a flying start
to the season netting fifteen goals in their opening two wins with
Sarah Robertson and new recruit International midfielder Nikki Kidd
featuring prominently in the scoring charts.
University’s apparent free scoring ability could be the key to
this game. Western created many chances against Grove last Sunday
without being able to test former International goalkeeper Debbie
McLeod who has made a welcome return for the champions to fill the
void left by Nikki Cochrane’s move to the visitors.
This will be another severe test of the resolve of the champions
as they look to continue their impressive run of consecutive league
titles.
If Western are to mount another serious title challenge this
season then the obvious inability to convert the myriad of chances
created in games will have to be addressed as a matter of great
urgency. Giffnock are the visitors to Titwood(14.30) this weekend
and traditionally games between the two sides are closely fought
affairs.
Western have a young side with undoubted potential but coach
Neil Menzies must be looking for a more mature clinical
performances in front of goal to convert more of the many
opportunities created.
The visitors suffered a chastening 10-0 home defeat to Grove
last Saturday where pride must have been severely dented and new
player/coach Kareena Marshall will have a job on her hands to lift
spirits. The continued absence of Rhona Simpson obviously is a
telling factor.
Grange have home advantage at Peffermill(16.15) against a CALA
Edinburgh side who have made a very promising start to the campaign
registering two early wins out of the first three games.
The home side will be looking for their first win of the season
following a fighting 3-3 draw with Dundee Wanderers last weekend on
Tayside where they should great spirit by equalising in the closing
minutes.
The final fixture sees the meeting of two teams who have both made
difficult starts to the season when Inverleith meet Kelburne at
Mary Erskine’s School(14.00.)
However the newly promoted Edinburgh team have without question
faced the most difficult start to the season of any team with games
against Grove and Western.
Inverleith will view this fixture as a much more realistic
opportunity to open their account against a Kelburne team who look
as if this season could be a struggle unless they start to score
goals and start to pick up points sooner rather than later.
The rescheduled league match between Western Wildcats and Giffnock
ended in a stalemate following a 2-2 draw at Auchenhowie.
