Grove continue to dominate
Grove Menzieshill once again demonstrated their hunger to retain
their title with a hard fought but fully deserved 2-1 win over
Edinburgh University in the match of the day in the Aberdeen Asset
Management Women’s League at DISC today.
Despite Louise Carroll having an early penalty stroke saved by
young Nikki Cochrane, the Taysiders opened the scoring when an
attempted cross, which appeared to be off target, was deflected in
off a defender.
Grove were enjoying the better of the midfield battle with Leigh
Fawcett prominent. Debbie McLeod was called into action for Grove
with a great save to prevent a Nikki Kidd drag flick from levelling
the score. However before the break Sarah Robertson made a great
run down the left and produced a good finish for the equaliser.
Grove restored their lead early in the second half when from a
set piece when Louise Baxter’s miss hit shot found its way past
Nikki Cochrane to secure an important win for the home side.
Milne Craig Clydesdale Western were made to work hard to secure
the points with a 2-0 win over local rivals Giffnock at Titwood.
Games between the two sides are traditionally closely fought
encounters and, despite enjoying almost complete territorial
domination, this proved to be no different.
Credit must be given for well organised defending by a Giffnock
team relying heavily on the presence and influence of veteran Rhona
Simpson but once again Western’s problems in the circle were
obvious for all to see.
The game was scoreless at the break and it looked as if Giffnock
might hang on for a share of the points with their keeper producing
inspired saves and the woodwork also playing a part. However when
the visitors’ Suzie Blake had to leave the field with a head knock,
Western took full advantage of the numerical advantage in the final
ten minutes.
Firstly Susan McGilvary pounced on a rebound, from a set piece,
at the top of the circle to rifle a low shot into the keeper’s
right hand corner. Then in the final minute the same player struck
a low shot, from a well rehearsed penalty corner, which went into
the other corner off a defender.
In the other games played, Kelburne claimed their first win of
the season with a narrow 2-1 over newly promoted Inverleith In
Edinburgh and CALA came out on top in the Edinburgh derby 3-1
against Grange at Peffermill.
