GB women miss out on the Olympic final
OLYMPIC SEMI-FINALS
GREAT BRITAIN 1 ARGENTINA
2 (WOMEN)
Scots Emily Maguire and Laura Bartlett will have to
settle for bronze as Great Britain women lost 2-1 to Argentina in
the semi-final of the Olympic Games.
Danny Kerry`s side never got to grips with an experienced
Argentina side in a rather untidy contest. It was a mountain
to climb when Noel Barrionuevo opened the scoring from a low shot
at a penalty corner in only five minutes. The writing
was on the wall after Carla Rebecchi was allowed to weave along the
by-line past Beth Storry and prostrate push the ball into the empty
net.
Kerry`s troops pushed to get back into the game in the second
half and a set piece shot by Crista Cullen was blocked by the stick
of a defender in the opening minutes. The pressure finally
told when a cross by Helen Richardson was deflected home by Alex
Danson on her knees in the closing minutes, but too little too
late.
GB now play outsiders New Zealand for bonze tomorrow, the Kiwis
lost out to the favourites Netherlands 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out
after the teams were level 2-2 in normal time.
