GB player Vikki Bunce visits local hockey activities in Edinburgh

Scotland international and Great Britain hopeful
Vikki Bunce took time out of her busy schedule last Friday to make
a series of visits to hockey activities taking place in Edinburgh
and East Lothian.
“I had a great day visiting the East Lothian
Development squad, the East District trials and the CashBack for
Communities hockey sessions. I really enjoyed meeting the different
groups of youngsters and hope they took some tips and advice away
that will help develop and progress their hockey.”
In the company of two groups of young hockey
players in the East Lothian development squad, Vikki delivered an
inspiring presentation into her life as a GB athlete, including her
weekly training schedule, nutrition and recovery, using video
technology to analyse her performances in matches, and balancing
her current Great Britain commitments as a mother to a three
year-old son. There was also an opportunity for the players to have
their sticks autographed.
Fiona Harfield, East Lothian Development Officer,
said:
“The kids were so excited about having Vikki at
their squad session and asked lots of really great questions along
the lines of her hectic training schedule, her diet and the
sacrifices she has had to make throughout her playing career.
A lot of the players had U15 East District trials later that
afternoon and asked Vikki for some advice.  Later they told me
that her visit definitely made a difference to their performance
and hope to follow in her footsteps.”
Following the visit to East Lothian, there was an
opportunity for the girls taking part in the East District U15
trials at Peffermill to meet Vikki and have some photographs taken
with her.
In the company of fellow Scotland international
Leigh Fawcett, there was a final visit of the day to a ‘Hockey
Nights’ session at Drumbrae Leisure Centre to meet a group of
youngsters who were trying hockey for the first time. ‘Hockey
Nights’ is Scottish Hockey’s participation programme in partnership
with the Scottish Government’s ‘CashBack for Communities’
initiative. Both players were on hand to demonstrate some
introductory hockey skills and answer questions about their lives
as internationalists.
Bill Robson, CashBack East Development Officer,
said:
“I’m delighted Vikki and Leigh were able to attend
and demonstrate some of the hockey skills that have seen them
compete in top class hockey competitions around the world. It’s
fantastic for the youngsters to meet international players at the
‘Hockey Nights’ sessions and we’re planning on having players come
to a number of our sessions in the forthcoming months.”

The presentation included info on her weekly training schedule,
nutrition and recovery, using video technology to analyse her
performances in matches, and balancing her current Great Britain
programme commitments with being a mother to a three year-old son –
only one of four current female athletes aiming to compete in the
Olympic Games in July.

There was also an opportunity for the players to have their
sticks autographed and ask questions.
