EUROHOCKEYCHAMPS27 QUALIFIED!! 10 GOAL THRILLER SEALS THE WIN FOR SCOTLAND MEN
Scotland men seal their place at the EuroHockey Championships 2027 next summer in London, after a 10-goal thriller against Croatia in the Semi-Final of the EuroHockey Qualifier I Championship 2026.
With Scotland ranking 24 places higher than Croatia, the pressure was on Scotland to seal the victory. With temperature reaching over 40 degrees celsius, quick subbing rotations would play a huge part in sustaining both team’s energy levels until the end.
Tommy Orr for Scotland stands in the anthem line-up fresh from his first cap performance in yesterday game verses Türkiye. With the sun beating down on the pitch, situated just outside of Rome, the conditions were always going to make for a tense and thrilling game.
Scotland started the semi-final with an aerial ball deep into the Croatia defence to immediately put them under pressure. A fast-paced ball to Struan Walker on the base line won Scotland their first penalty corner, Jamie Golden’s infamous drag flick strikes again after only 3 minutes to open the scoring.
Croatia lose possession after the restart and Scotland exploit the opportunity and get awarded their second penalty corner, after Fran Gjurinski failed to control an aerial ball in the circle. Scotland strike again, this time Struan Walker with a back-space goal, after a well worked team short corner.
The game begins to even out going into the second half of this quarter, Croatia defence holding off Scotland attack well. Tommy Alexander made a screamer of a save to deny Croatia their first goal in the last 20 seconds of the quarter.
Both teams get an extended break between quarters due to the challenging heat conditions. Scotland open the second quarter with their third goal, this time a field goal from Cammy Golden, Scotland certainly took the momentum from the first quarter.
Croatia bounced back, working hard to be awarded two short corners in quick succession, strong work from Tommy Alexander his defence save both.
The tables turned back very quickly, with a Scotland turnover, skilled performance from Cammy Golden through the midfield, picking up teammate Struan Walker who took a 1v1 with the Croatian keeper. Unfortunately, not successful in getting his second on the board.
Scotland continued to enjoy their aerial game, letting the ball do the work in the scorching temperatures. Croatia appealed a Scotland penalty corner and are were successful in overturning the decision. Soon after Croatia get their own penalty corner, after a build-up of play through the midfield. Alexander saves the drag flick straight through the middle.
Both teams saw plenty of the ball in the second half of this quarter, with both teams having successful steals in the midfield. Croatia’s defence struggled to dismantle the Scot’s attack.
Tommy Alexander started this quarter from the dugout and Calum Douglas starts the second-half. It wasn’t long before Douglas saw his first action, a penalty stroke in the second minute, Croatia scored hard in the bottom left corner to pull one back.
Croatia had another two penalty corners in quick succession, after playing into Scotland bodies. Croatian teamwork around the Scotland defence led to them getting their second in the 37th minute of the game.
Scotland fought back with a sensational ball into the circle from McAllister, almost led to Jamie Golden getting his second from a deflection on the back post. Scotland were fighting back despite Croatia having the initial momentum in this quarter.
One goal scoreline made for a tense end to the third quarter, but Scotland rose the challenge and Golden got his second. A more comfortable end to the quarter than how it started for Scotland, Croatia needing to regroup going into the final 15.
What a start to the final quarter with Jamie golden getting his hat-trick, another signature drag flick to the top left corner, if we thought the first two were good this one was even better. Croatia were quick to respond to the pressure, despite a miss trap at the top of the circle they put the effort on the rebounds and captain Mario Mucic managed to get the ball in the back of the net.
Golden nearly gets a fourth from a quick turnover with Tommy Orr on the post, but the ball just goes wide for yesterday’s debutant. His time in the blue shirt without a goal didn’t last long though, 2 minutes later Orr gets the ball in the back of the net with a deflection on the left post.
Its not all over for Croatia, winning a corner at the other end of the pitch, a well-executed corner but found the body of Andrew McConnell. Croatia counterattack created another penalty corner opportunity; Lucas Bachman gets his second from a flawless drag flick to the bottom right corner.
Needing to chase the game, Croatia pulled their goalkeeper and it proved to be an effective decision for Croatia as the team win their 8th penalty corner of the match. Jamie Golden was on hand to save it on the line, showing again why he was a worthy of being awarded Man of the Match not just for his hat-trick of goals.
Croatia continued to push all the way but they could not find any more goals. The final whistle blows and Scotland win their spot in the EuroHockey Championships next summer in London, alongside the final on Sunday, facing either Portugal or Italy at 15:00.
