Derby day on Tayside

The league table in the Aberdeen Asset Management Women’s League
has an all too familiar look at the moment with Grove Menzieshill
and Milne Craig Clydesdale Western occupying the top two
places.

However CALA Edinburgh, having made the most of a promising
start to the season, occupy third spot, separated from Western only
by goal difference. Also Edinburgh University and Dundee Wanderers
are closely tucked in behind the top three, with games in hand,
suggesting there could be more depth to the challenge for the title
this season albeit that it is still early days.

It is derby day on Tayside with unbeaten Grove making the short
trip across the city to face Dundee Wanderers at the local High
School (14.30.) Grove captain Ailsa Wylie has expressed her delight
with the start to the season reasoning that “a good mix of youth,
new players and experience” as the key to the success.

However Wanderers will be looking to halt the champions unbeaten
run with Vikki Bunce available regularly each week, after her time
down south with GB last season, giving grounds for further
optimism.

Wylie added “We have enjoyed competitive and close matches in
the last couple of weeks and fully expect that to be the case again
on Saturday.” However Wanderers recent inactivity could prove to be
a telling factor in the outcome of this game.

Edinburgh University will join Western, on the same points
total, if they can secure a win when the two sides meet at
Peffermill on Saturday (14.45), which would then give Sam Judge’s
side the chance to go ahead of the Glasgow team when they face
Grange on Sunday (13.30.)

Looking forward to the weekend Judge made it clear that “It is
always good to play against the top teams and Western are
definitely that and we realise it will be really tough.” The home
side will be looking to bounce back after last weekend’s defeat by
Grove and the player/coach went on to add “Western have quality
throughout which we will need to match. Grange will also be tough
as there is local rivalry.”

CALA Edinburgh will be looking to continue their good run of
form when they entertain at Meggatland (14.00), a Western Wildcats
team sitting second bottom, at present, despite some encouraging
early season performances in the Cup competition.

Giffnock will hope to that some rather unconvincing performances
are now behind them as they take on bottom club Inverleith , still
looking to get their first points on the board, at Hutcheson’s
Grammar School (14.00.)

The programme is completed with a clash between Kelburne and
Grange with both teams desperate to claim the points which would
see either of them edge towards the relative safety of a mid table
place.

The Paisley team will be pleased to have managed their first win
of the season last weekend and will hope that they can build
further this weekend. Grange will be equally keen to take points
from this fixture especially as the following day, high flying
Edinburgh University come calling.
