Belgium U16 Girls win Summer 4 Nations in Glasgow
Belgium U16 Girls 1-1(3-2) Germany U16 Girls
Belgium U16 Girls were crowned winners of the Summer 4 Nations in Glasgow in a 3-2 shootout victory over Germany following a 1-1 draw at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.
Germany started the game well and were on the front foot from the first whistle. They nearly scored early when Estelle Van Engeland burst into the circle and shot across goal, bet her effort was well saved by the outstretched boot of Celine Deprez.
The first goal would come soon enough. Penalty corner expert Franziska Pabsch drew first blood in the game when she launched a drag flick into the roof of the net to make it 1-0.
In the second quarter a sensation diving save at the left post by Deprez denied Rosa Kunz a goal for Germany, as they looked to out some daylight between the teams.
Then a superb double save by Deprez denied Kunze again, followed by Julie Morgenstern on the rebound.
The Germans had a great chance to score a second from the penalty spot but Mai Steinebach scooped her effort over the bar.
Belgium struck back however. With four minutes of the half remaining a deflection by Maylin Balon-Perin saw the ball ping into the roof of the net to make it 1-1, which was how the half ended.
The second half saw Germany continue to enjoy good possession but Belgium looked a danger on the counter. It was on the counter that Laure De Praetere almost gave Belgium the lead, latching onto a loose pass and tearing through on goal, but Johanna Warnecke was a match for the effort in goal for Germany.
The final quarter brought tension. With five minutes to play the Germans were awarded their second stroke of the match. This time Pabsch stepped up to strike but found her effort down the middle saved by the legs of the goalkeeper.
There would be no further goals and the match went to a shootout, and the tension cranked up another notch. After five running penalties each, it went to sudden death with Mia Brennecke and Steinebach netting for Germany, and Emma Herzeele and De Praetere scoring for Belgium.
De Praetere stepped up and scored again for Belgium before a save by Evy Verbruggen denied Pina Baumeister, and gave Belgium the title.
England U16 Girls 4-0 Scotland Emerging Girls
Third place in the Summer 4 Nations at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre went to England U16 Girls with a 4-0 win over Scotland.
It was a very even opening quarter with neither side giving much away in terms of chances. England edged the possession but Scotland played out well and enjoyed good periods of control.
In the second quarter England won a penalty corner and Scotland survived a pile up in the circle as England tried to force the ball over the line.
A second corner for England soon followed the first and again the Scots battled to force the ball clear from goal.
A spell of English pressure eventually resulted in a goal when a ball blasted in from the left was converted by Evie Cronin for 1-0.
Almost instantly it went to 2-0 as a Cronin pass allowed Biba Mills to run through on goal with just the keeper to beat and slot the ball into the bottom left corner.
Early in the second half Isla Campbell almost scored a third for England after they opened the Scots up down the right, and Campbell’s effort whizzed just wide of the left post.
The third goal did come for England and it was Mills who struck again, this time from a stroke dispatched low against the backboard. 3-0.
Cecily Moorhead added a fourth for England as the quarter ended with a low effort on the reverse that snuck into the net through a crowd of defenders.
Scotland came out fighting in the final quarter as they went hunting for goal. Amy Clark was composed and distributed the ball well from the back while Ava Graham was industrious in midfield. Amelia Wilson ran tirelessly up field for Scotland, but the Scots couldn’t find the net and England finish up 4-0 winners in third spot.
