All the pressure but no goals for under 21 Scots
WALES 1 SCOTLAND 0 – UNDER
21 CELTIC CUP (WOMEN)
Scotland dictated the play, but it`s goals that count,
and a single strike from Phoebe Richards was sufficient to give
Wales a 1-0 victory in the final match of the under 21 Celtic Cup
in Wrexham.
A frustrated Sharon Bissett, Scotland`s manager, said: “Although
we didn`t play particularly well, we were in the Welsh circle 25
times in all, but failed to upgrade this pressure into either
penalty corners or shots at goal.”
Wales took the lead midway through the first half, but the Scots
had a chance to level the score at a penalty corner three minutes
later, but Nikki Mollison`s shot was blocked by the running out
defender and the opportunity vanished. Just on the
interval Wales had three successive penalty corners, but Scots
keeper Siobhan was equal to the task.
The Scots totally dominated the second half, they were encamped
in the Welsh half for almost the entire period, but actually
created very few clear-cut chances. Good build-up play
from Lucy Lanigan created an opening but her cross was just missed
by Louise Campbell. At a penalty corner the ball was
slipped to Ali Howie but her attempt was blocked by a defender.
Despite a frantic flow of attacking moves by the Scots in the
final minutes in search of the elusive equaliser, the Welsh defence
held out to take the three points, leaving Scotland at the bottom
of the pool.
