A Little Shuffle in the Open/Men’s Premiership but not in the Women’s
Western Wildcats still hold a three-point lead at the top of the Open/Men’s Premiership, but now it is ESM Lions and Uddingston who are challenging as Watsonians drop down to fourth after going down 3-1 to Uddy. However, it is still very tight at the top with six points separating the top four, but then again both Watsonians and Uddingston have a game in hand. All to play for towards the winter shutdown.
In the Women’s Premiership there is no such shuffle as both Watsonians and Azets Clydesdale Western seem to be in complete command.
Uddingston continued their impressive run of form this season, they are still undefeated after seven games with a 3-1 win at Watsonians. Euan Gilmour, Ewan Hutchinson and Joe Russell were on target for the Lanarkshire side while Charlie Jack got on the scoresheet for Watsonians. Uddy move into third spot and with a game in hand.
Western Wildcats stay at the top of the tree with a narrow 2-1 win over Hillhead at Auchenhowie. That was the score at the interval, Rob Harwood put Western ahead, Fraser Ward replied for Hillhead from the spot, but the winner came from Hamish Galt. There was no scoring in the second half.
ESM Lions continue their impressive undefeated run with a 2-0 win over Grove Menzieshill, but it took to the second half to confirm their dominance. The first half was fairly even and there were no goals. The deadlock was broken following a well worked move which allowed Jamie Hogarth to lay the ball on to Theo Wood who converted the opportunity. The result was sealed with another strike from Wood and result leaves the Lions pressing at the top. The Lions move into second spot in the table, for perhaps for the first time.
Clydesdale are within a point of a top four spot after another victory, this time a goal avalanche at Inverleith, the teams shared twelve goals with the Dale getting seven. In the goal flurry Euan Anderson got a couple and the others came from Andrew Allan, Ryan Dunbar, Euan Lindsay, Camerson Mitchell and Charley Feeney. In reply Mark Harley scored twice for Inverleith with Mati Ruiz, Stuart Hatton and Kyle Taylor getting the others. Whatever the result, twelve goals was top of the goal tally for the day.
Edinburgh University are on the rebound in the defence of their crown with a 6-0 win at Kelburne. Sam Hunt was top scorer with a double while Angus Millar, Arthur Owens, Tom Cahalin and Joch Love added to the tally, but Uni continue in sixth place with a lot still to do.
Grange continued their route to safety following a 4-2 win at bottom side Dunfermline Carnegie, but it was left a little late. It almost looked as if the Fifers might grasp their first point of the campaign when the scores stood at 2-2 going into the final quarter. Tom Hill and Murray Banks had scored for Grange but Gary Clark and Magnus Ferrier replied for Carnegie. Grange stepped it up towards the end with further strikes from Niko Kinder on his first outing for the club and then Calum Wood to take the vital three points. Grange move up to seventh in the table while Carnegie remain at the foot.
In the Women’s Premiership a crushing result in Edinburgh as top Watsonians put 16 past bottom Glasgow University to consolidate their pole position at the top of the Women’s Premiership. In the goal avalanche there were four goals for both Milly Berndes-Cade and Sarah Jamieson, a hat-trick for Fiona Burnet, two scored by Kate Brett and singles by Katherine Holdgate, Ellie Rutherford and Katie Crawford.
Azets Clydesdale Western were almost equally clinical; they welcomed fourth placed Grange to Titwood and gave them eight of the best. Here there were doubles for both Jenny Eadie and Sophie Hinds while the others came from Jika Nyirenda, Rhiannon Carr, Frances Lonergan and Laura Paul.
The outcome is that Watsonians are still ahead by three points and a better goal difference, but Clydesdale have a game in hand, still tight!
There are four teams now on eight points as a result of today’s games. Uddingston appear to be top of the pile on goal difference after a 4-0 win at Hillhead.
On goal difference Wildcats are just behind after a 2-2 draw against Edinburgh University. Both the Cats goals came from penalty corners through Alex Stuart and Kate Kellock while Emily McLean and Kirsten Murison replied for the students. Edinburgh are on seven points but have a game in hand.
St Andrews University kick started their recovery with a 2-0 win at Gordonians, the goals came from Emmy Tran and Hannah Coull from the spot.
Grange are also on eight points but have slipped back on goal difference after conceding eight to Clydesdale.
