Scotland make it three wins out of three against Chile to end the Saltire Series

Scotland Men faced Chile in the final match of a three-match series at Peffermill, with Scotland having won the first two without conceding a goal. It was a dry evening at Peffermill and the crowd came out to support as Scotland aimed for three out of three.  

In the first quarter Scotland started fast on the attack and it was not long before Jacob Tweedie won the first penalty corner of the tie, but Jamie Golden’s effort was denied by the Chilean defence. Despite the Scotland pressure, Chile found themselves on a break but their first entry into the circle was denied by strong Scotland defending. Scotland continued to have most of the possession and as the Golden brothers worked together to break down the defence, some last-ditch effort prevented an opening goal in the first quarter. 

Into the second quarter and Scotland continued to press forward, yet their opponents still looked dangerous on the counterattack. Ali Douglas and Ollie Wilson put pressure on the Chile defence on various occasion, but Scotland failed to find the opener. 

Chile came out fast after half time, but Scotland quickly regained control and created further chances while keeping the Chilean attacks to a minimum. Scotland won a corner with 3 minutes to go but the goalkeeper again denied J Golden. As we entered the last minute of the quarter, good work by Golden and Keir Robb won Scotland a third corner and it was third time lucky for Jamie Golden as he fired the ball into the top corner to give Scotland a deserved lead. The quarter was not done yet, a mistake allowed Chile to create an opening for themselves, but Tommy Alexander made a great save to keep his side in the lead. 

Scotland came out flying in the final quarter and within thirty seconds had scored their second. Callum MacKenzie found his way into the circle and Keir Robb slid in at the back post to deflect the ball home. Both sides exchanged chances as the game moved towards the end, Chile finally got their first corner of the game, but Alexander again saved to preserve Scotland’s clean sheet. In the final seconds Andy McConnell almost got a third but his shot across the goal fizzed just wide. Scotland ended the series with another win, conceding zero goals.
