Scotland men’s Head Coach and Programme Lead update

Scottish Hockey would like to share that Jonny Caren has made the decision to step down from his position as Scotland men’s Head Coach and Programme Lead.

Scottish Hockey would like to thank Jonny for his work over the last few years, with the team winning four medals in four tournaments, including gold at Nations Cup 2 in Oman earlier this year. A tremendous success.

Jonny navigated the transition of the men’s programme after inheriting a squad with 75% of the team having retired or stepped back before coming into post. He capped 17 new athletes in his tenure, building an exciting young squad, and oversaw transition of athletes into the GB senior squad and GB EDP programme.

Scottish Hockey is committed to providing consistency and support across the performance pathway. In the men’s programme as we build towards an exciting year in 2026, Neil Allan will be stepping into the Head Coach and Programme Lead role on an interim basis until the end of 2025.

Neil has been Assistant Coach for Scotland men since 2023 and has previously been Head Coach of Scotland U16 Boys (2012-16); Head Coach of Scotland U18 Boys (2016-18); Assistant Coach for Scotland U21 Men (2012 and 2016-23); and Lead Coach for Scotland U23 Men (2020-23).

Neil has also coached four men’s premiership teams, including Grove Menzieshill in the EHL and is currently Head of Hockey and Head of Men’s Performance hockey at Edinburgh University. He was also head of hockey at Loretto for eight years.

Neil brings a wealth of experience, passion, and drive to men’s performance hockey. Luke Stone will also remain in his capacity of Assistant Coach.

Scottish Hockey Lead Manager in Performance, Vikki Strachan said, “I’d like to thank Jonny for his work in the men’s programme. The senior men’s programme has developed an energy and progressed on the pitch and I’m excited about what lies ahead for this excellent group of players. We all wish Jonny the best for the future.

“As we approach a critical year for the Scotland men’s team, with a World Cup qualification event scheduled in Q1 of 2026, it is essential that Scottish Hockey prioritises consistency and stability within the programme. To support athlete preparation and performance, we will maintain the coaching team who have supported the group throughout this year and I’m delighted that Neil will step up into the head coach role in the interim. This will ensure a consistency in approach to guide the team, providing reassurance and direction during this important phase.

“While the recruitment process for long-term leadership begins, appointing an interim lead who is already embedded in the programme will bring important continuity in the short term and compliment athlete welfare whilst maintaining momentum. This approach will allow the team to focus fully on their performance.”
