Inverleith V Western Wildcats the potential highlight of day 2 in the men`s indoor competition

So where are we after the opening day of action in the men`s indoor National League division 1?

Top of the pile are Inverleith with nine points from their three games, Watsonians have six points along with Western Wildcats who have played a game less. Then come the Tayside pair of Grove Menzieshill and Dundee Wanderers on four apiece with a bit to do. And finally Uddingston, Grange and Hillhead who have yet to get off the mark.

Inverleith certainly hit the ground running with maximum points and 27 goals in the process. Keir Robb and captain Kyle Taylor were on target with eight apiece and were ably supported by Alex Wilson and Charlie Jack.

But is long-term coach Stuart Neave getting carried away – absolutely not.   He simply said: “It is always good to get maximum points on a three game day.   However, there are still three more Saturdays of fixtures to go.”

And on Saturday the Edinburgh side have their opening game against rivals Western Wildcats – which should be the game of the day.   Stuart puts the occasion into contest.  “It will be an interesting first match on Saturday as Western are the current title holders and have a strong squad of players again.  Whatever happens nothing is going to be decided this week.”

Whatever the result the game should produce a plethora of goals as the Cats are capable of a good mauling. Jamie Golden is a potential match winner along with Fraser Moran, Tommy Austin and Rob Harwood.

So a feast of goals is perhaps on offer in this encounter.

Inverleith will finish the day against Hillhead while Wildcats have two other fixtures against Dundee Wanderers and Watsonians…and that might not be so easy.

Watsonians under the eye of Dan Coultas have blossomed this indoor season, as they have outdoor, and must rank as possible contenders after victories over Grange and Wanderers.  The Edinburgh side could hang on to their top four status if they can take the three points from their opening encounter against Uddingston, although their second outing against Western could be a bit more challenging.

It was a mixed opening day for the Dundee pair of Grove Menzieshill and Dundee Wanderers – only four points from their three games.  The former should pick up six points this Saturday against Hillhead and Uddingston, essential if they are to progress up the table.  That could depend on the sharp shooting of Albert Rowling, Luke Cranney and Chris McFadden.

Wanderers have a more challenging assignment with their opening game against Wildcats but could well pick up three points in their second match against Grange.

So what about the pointless trio. That will no long be the scenario at the end of Saturday as Grange take on Hillhead and then play Grange – and therefore some points will be distributed among the bottom sides.
