Dundee Wanderers push top sides close in women`s indoor
Dundee Wanderers have certainly made their presence felt in the women`s National League; they came within a goal to frustrating the title aspirations of both Clydesdale Western and Watsonians but in the end fell just short. So after Sunday`s action both Clydesdale and Watsonians are out on top with maximum points from four games and in line to top the division.
Clydesdale Western opened the day`s proceedings with a 7-4 win over Wildcats. Clydesdale were always on the front foot after Millie Steiger and Kayleigh Justice at penalty corners put them two up in only six minutes. Millie Skidmore pulled one back for the Cats but by the interval Justice had added two more for her hat-trick and a 4-1 Clydesdale lead by the break. The second half saw a rapid exchange of goals – Corrie Hay, Alex Stuart and Kate Holmes for the Cats and Anna Hoolaghan and Steiger again for Clydesdale, but the latter were now only 6-4 ahead. But with four minutes left Lucy Williamson sunk a penalty corner and Clydesdale had secured the points.
Dundee Wanderers were also early winners at DISC, they beat Grange 7-2 with five of their goals coming from penalty corners. The foundation was laid in the opening twelve minutes with goals from Jess Ross (2), Charlotte Watson and Amy Snell with India Fraser replying for the Edinburgh side. Wanderers advanced their score to seven through Sam Sangster and a double from Watson although Vic White notched a consolation for Grange.
Watsonians entry to proceedings produced nine goals against an Uddingston side that only fielded six players. It was 3-1 at the interval; Sarah Mackay opened, then Jess Garden and Sarah Jamieson with Kirsty Wratten getting Uddy`s goal. But the second half produced a procession of goals from the champions – Jamieson scored another three, Mackay got a second for herself and Garden completed the scoring with a double for her hat-trick.
Then Hillhead picked up their first point of the campaign with a 2-2 draw with Wildcats. The Cats got their claws into the game in the opening six minutes of the game with strikes from Lucy Macmillan and Jen Veitch at a penalty corner…and looked to be purring along until Hillhead`s Emma Blackstock pulled one back a minute later. And that is how it stood at the interval. The only goal of the second half came from Morna Sinclair to secure Hillhead a share of the points.
Game five of the day between Clydesdale Western and Dundee Wanderers seemed to have everything – 13 goals in total, never more than one goal between the teams, one green and three yellow cards and the winner secured in the final minute. And there were four goals for Clydesdale`s Lucy Williamson and a hat-trick for Wanderers` Sam Sangster – what else do you want! And it was Clydesdale who galloped to a 7-6 victory to keep their perfect record.
The first half finished square, Amy Snelle and Sam Sangster scored for Wanderers while Lucy Williamson got two. With six minutes left it looked as if the Taysiders were going to sneak the three points when they advanced the tally to 6-5 with Lucie Johnson, Snelle again, and a couple from Sangster while another Williamson brace and Kayleigh Justice were Clydesdale`s replies. But in the closing moments Millie Steiger and player/coach Fiona Semple sneaked the victory for the Glasgow side, the latter strike coming with one second left on the clock.
A profitable day out for Hillhead, they improved on their earlier draw with a 3-0 win over Grange. The Glasgow side were two to the good in the first half through Ciara Goddard at a penalty corner and Alex Burdon. That is how the score remained until the final three minutes when captain Rachel Osborne sealed the win with a third strike.
Wildcats slipped into third place after a 3-0 win over Uddingston. It was Kate Holmes who put the Cats into a first half lead at a penalty corner. That is how it stood until four minutes from the end when the Cats victory was confirmed by further strikes from Lucy Macmillan and Holmes again.
In the final game of the day Wanderers were again at the wrong end of a narrow defeat – this time 4-3 against Watsonians. The only goal of the first half, almost inevitably, came from Sarah Jamieson to put the Edinburgh side one up. It might have been more even if Charlotte Watson had not failed from the spot for the Taysiders. Further Watsonians goals came early in the second half from Jamieson again and Jenna Park but the Dundonians were not to be denied with comeback strikes from Sam Sangster and Amy Snelle at penalty corners to reduce the deficit to 3-2. Jamieson then had a penalty saved by Carmin Dow but a penalty corner conversion by Katie Maccallum gave Watsonians a 4-2 cushion. Sam Sangster scored another set piece in the final minute but too late to affect the final outcome.
