Young Scots lose to Germany in Den Bosch
VOLVO EUROPEAN JUNIOR NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIPS (MEN) – DEN
BOSCH (NED) – 26 AUGUST to 01 SEPTEMBER 2012
SCOTLAND 1 GERMANY 6
The opening fixture against Germany, bronze medallists
two years ago, in the Volvo European Junior Nations Championships
in Den Bosch was always going to be a baptism of fire for the
inexperienced Scotland under 21 side, and so it proved as they went
down 6-1 to one of the tournament favourites.
With so many young players in the Scotland side, it was hardly
surprising that Graham Moodie`s charges made a very nervous start
to proceedings and perhaps paid the Germany too much respect.
The Germans took full advantage and opened the scoring in only five
minutes with a penalty corner strike by Mats Grambusch.
Germany continued to dominate with the Scots pinned back into
their own half and fell three behind at the interval through
further goals by Benedikt Swiatek and Danny Nguyen Luong. The
Scots cause was not helped when Grange defender Fraser Sands found
himself in the sin bin on two occasions with a yellow card for
stick offences on either side of the interval.
The second half looked like being a procession of German goals
as Jan Christopher Ruhr, Niklas Wellen and Dieter Linnekogel
advanced the score to 6-0 with 20 minutes still
remaining. But the Scots rallied, stemmed the German
attacks, and took advantage of their only real chance of the
contest. With two minutes to go a move up the left found Alan
Forsyth, he passed the ball on to teenager Lee Morton, but his shot
was going wide of the target until Clydesdale`s Scott Lindsay
deflected it into the top corner of the net for a consolation
strike.
“After a very nervy start, we worked hard to get back into the
game and it was a tremendous experience for the younger players as
they got used to the standard of Europe`s top flight.
The result is not the end of the world, the game against Germany
was not one of our targeted matches,” said Neil Allan, Scotland`s
manager.
Belgium share top spot with Germany after beating Spain 4-0 in
the other pool match.
