Women`s indoor semi-finalists all in place

After today`s round of pool matches the semi-finalists have emerged – Watsonians and Clydesdale Western have all topped their pools while Dundee Wanderers and Wildcats have come second and join them in the semi-finals.

An eightsome reel for Watsonians` Sarah Jamieson – the Scotland striker scored all but one of the goals in a convincing 9-1 win over second placed Inverleith in the opening Pool A match of the day. As a result the Edinburgh side remain in pole position in the pool, six points ahead with two matches left and almost certain to top the pool at the end of the programme. The consequence for Inverleith is that they slip back into third place.

Watsonians were 4-1 ahead at the interval, Jamieson had scored all four with Stella Hunger replying for Inverleith. The Jamieson show continued in the second half with four more, only interrupted by a penalty corner strike by Emily Dark.

Dundee Wanderers` set piece expert Sam Sangster decided to strap up her injured ankle from the opening day and take the field after six minutes play. And just as well, her hat-trick of penalty corner goals was the catalyst in her side`s 4-1 win over Edinburgh CALA and a move up to second spot on the table.

Edinburgh opened the scoring in 9 minutes through Amy Russell, but just on the interval came the first of Sangster`s strikes to level. Midway through the second half Sangster added two more set piece goals in as many minutes to effectively seal the result. In the final minute Lucy Williamson added a fourth to confirm the three points.

In the other pool leaders Clydesdale Western kept their perfect record but they only disposed of the challenge of second placed Wildcats by the odd goal in three.

The champions took the lead in 8 minutes with an open play strike by Carla MacNiven – and that is how it stood at the break. Victory seemed secure when Anna Hoolaghan doubled Clydesdale`s lead with six minutes left. Just when Clydesdale keeper saw a clean sheet emerging Olivia Finch scored for the Cats – but it was too late to affect the final outcome.

With a six point lead Clydesdale are now almost certain to finish top of the pool while the Cats have still work to do to grasp the other semi-final spot.

Edinburgh University, with only the bare six players in today`s squad, picked up their first points in the pool with a 2-0 win over Grove Menzieshill. The students move out of bottom spot, but only on a slender goal difference from the Dundonians. There were no goals until the final three minutes when Jika Nyirenda scored twice to secure the three points for the Edinburgh students.

Dundee Wanderers secured their place in the semi-finals with another 4-1 win – this time over Inverleith. The Taysiders are now firmly planted in second place in pool A with a five point lead over Inverleith with only one game remaining.

Wanderers were two up in seven minutes and again their penalty corner routine was in fine working order with Sam Sangster and Lucy Williamson on target. Amy Snelle put the Dundonians three up from another set piece with five minutes remaining. Katie provided a whiff of a comeback with a late goal but that was stifled with another penalty corner conversion by Sangster.

The Sarah Jamieson show continued in Watsonians second outing of the day, she scored seven this time in a 13-1 win over bottom side Edinburgh CALA. Emily Dark opened for Watsonians in two minutes from a penalty corner only for Susan Rowe to level soon after. But that was the end of their resistance as the pool leaders romped into a 5-1 lead at the interval, Dark completed her hat-trick, Jamieson got her first of the match and Ellie Stott completed the scoring. There were eight goals in the second half for Watsonians, Jamieson scored six while Dark got another couple.

Wildcats secured their semi-final spot after a 4-2 win over Edinburgh University. The Cats got their claws into the game a few minutes into the second half with a quick couple from Rachel Osborne and Alex Stuart. Kathryn Meenan pulled one back for the students but the Cats piled in two more through Osborne and Olivia Finch before Jika Nyirenda notched a second for Edinburgh.

Clydesdale finished the day on a high note beating Grove Menzieshill 9-0, yet it was 0-0 at the interval. The prominent contribution came from former Scotland striker Fiona Semple with five, Millie Steiger scored a couple while Carla MacNiven and Margery Justice got the others.
