Wins for Grove and Giffnock
With a partial return to the outdoor programme, there
was some movement at the top of the women`s Subway national league,
Grove Menzieshill extended their lead at the top to five points
with a 7-2 win over CALA Edinburgh while Giffnock leapfrogged Milne
Craig Western into second spot after seeing off GHK
5-1.
The table setters seemed to be strolling towards another three
points when Leigh Fawcett, Louise Campbell and Ali Bell put Grove
three up, but just before the interval Amber Murray pulled one back
for the Edinburgh side. It was a little tight for a while
early in the second half when Kerry Smith scored another for CALA
to make it 3-2. Then Grove put their foot on the gas and
further strikes came from Jilly Bell, Linda Clement and a double
from Ali Bell to make her hat-trick and a convincing win at the end
for the champions.
Giffnock were three up at the interval against bottom side GHK,
the goals came from Cath Stirling from a penalty corner, Kareena
Marshall and Rhona Simpson. The East Renfrewshire side
added two more in the second half through Alex Wilson and Simpson
again, and have overtaken Western by two points but with a game
more played.
At the bottom of the table Grange gave themselves a bit of a
lifeline with a 2-0 away win at Western Wildcats.
First division Edinburgh University moved into a quarter final
tie with Milne Craig Western in some style with a 17-0 win over
Giffnock`s second string in the Arthur McKay Scottish Cup.
Player/coach Sam Judge led the charge with eight goals, Camilla
Lyttle got four and there were also goals for Jen Sturgess, Sarah
Robertson, sisters Laura and Bethan Mann and finally Ruth
Moffat.
In the men`s cup Granite City Wanderers progressed to a home tie
with first division Inverleith after beating Highland 3-1.
