Wildcats out to topple leaders Grove Menzieshill
Weekend Preview
Aberdeen Asset Management Men’s National League Division 1
Two of the three remaining undefeated teams in Aberdeen Asset Management Men’s National League Division 1 will clash on Saturday at Auchenhowie when Harry Dunlop’s Western Wildcats host table toppers Grove Menzieshill.
Both teams have been in good scoring form and will be confident of a win in this fixture. Last season Grove Menzieshill shocked the Wildcats with a 5-0 defeat at Auchenhowie. A repeat result is unlikely as the much improved home side look to continue their impressive start to the season.
At the opposite end of the table, Paul Dailly’s Dundee Wanderers host struggling Inverleith at Mayfield Park. Both teams suffered defeats last weekend, with Inverleith disappointed not to beat undefeated PSL Team Sport Clydesdale despite scoring six times, while Wanderers lost heavily to city rivals Grove Menzieshill. A win for Inverleith would see them move off the bottom of the table at the Taysiders’ expense.
Elsewhere, AAM Gordonians welcome this season’s surprise package Hillhead in what has been traditionally has been a closely fought encounter. The two sides had contrasting fortunes at the weekend, with Gordonians losing to a rampant Western Wildcats and Hillhead upsetting the form guide to beat European qualifiers Grange. The last time the two sides met, Gordonians won 2-0 in Aberdeen.
The final match on the fixture card sees undefeated PSL Team Sport Clydesdale play Graham Moodie’s Edinburgh University. Clydesdale have had a solid start to the season under John McKnight, with notable draws at home to Champions Kelburne and league leaders Grove Menzieshill.
Edinburgh University have endured a more difficult start to their season with defeats against the top three placed sides. A victory over Edinburgh rivals Inverleith more recently, however, may be a sign of better fortunes as the season continues.
With Glynhill Kelburne in EHL action this weekend, their fixture against Grange is postponed.
Aberdeen Asset Management Women’s National League Division 1
On Tayside, city rivals Grove Menzieshill and Dundee Wanderers will compete for the local bragging rights as they go head to head in Aberdeen Asset Management Women’s National League Division 1 on Saturday.
The defending champions go into the match boasting a 100% record whilst neighbours Wanderers are a win behind having lost to Milne Craig Clydesdale Western last week.
A win for Grove Menzieshill would give them a six point lead over their rivals, while a win for Wanderers would push them to the top of the league alongside their adversaries. A classic six pointer awaits.
Winless Watsonians face another difficult fixture on Saturday as they travel to Glasgow to play mid-table Kelburne. However, a narrow defeat at the hands of GHK was evidence that they are not far away from adding to their current points total.
Kelburne on the other hand have performed well against teams in the lower half of the table but have struggled against those in the upper echelons, most recently drawing a blank in a 4-0 defeat to undefeated Edinburgh University.
Buoyed by their first win of the season against second bottom Grange EL, Western Wildcats will be keen to continue their winning form against Edinburgh University at Auchenhowie. However, to win they will have to do something which no other team in the league have managed to do thus far this season and score against the students.
The form guide places Edinburgh University as clear favourites, with their prolific forwards keen to add to their impressive 21 goal return in three games.
GHK have made a terrific start to the season notching up wins against bottom teams Grange EL and Watsonians. Saturday’s match will be a greater test of their credentials though as they face on form Milne Craig Clydesdale Western, who are yet to drop a point having impressed last week in a comprehensive 5-2 win against Dundee Wanderers.
The final fixture of the day sees winless Grange EL play CALA Edinburgh at home. Both teams have had disappointing starts with CALA with one win and Grange one draw so far this season. Given their lowly points tallies, the result of this match will be of great significance to both sides as they look to move up the league.
