Western move into second spot

EUROHOCKEY INDOOR CLUB CUP (WOMEN) –
VIENNA

Milne Craig Western moved into second spot in the Subway
national league with a comfortable 2-0 win over rivals
Giffnock.

Western took the lead in only two minutes, Catriona Ralph`s
penalty corner shot was deftly touched over the keeper by Fiona
Bruce.  Western continued to dominate but failed to take their
chances to increase the lead, and that included five wasted penalty
corners.    But with only three seconds remaining in
the first half Karin Belch doubled the score with a fierce reverse
stick shot.

Western held the upper hand in the second half but again their
finishing let them down although Giffnock very rarely threatened
Amy Gibson in the Western goal.

Grove Menzieshill are still in pole position with a 3-1 home win
over Grange, their goals came from Louise Campbell, Danielle
Johnstone and Linda Clement.

Edinburgh University maintained their fourth spot with a narrow
4-3 win over bottom side GHK.   Sarah Robertson (2), Sam
Judge and Camilla Lyttle found the net for the students while GHK`s
scorers were Fiona Donald, Lucy McCall and Suzy McKenzie.

Western Wildcats did not help their survival target much by
losing 5-1 at home to Glynhill Kelburne.

Meanwhile in Vienna, VWS Dundee Wanderers were consigned to the
relegation pool of the women`s European Indoor Club Cup when they
went down 7-0 to tournament favourites Berliner from Germany in
their final group match.  The Taysiders were two down at the
interval, but the stuffing was knocked out of the Scots with three
penalty corner strikes from Natasha Keller in four minutes.

The Taysiders are now facing the drop when they lost 2-1 to MSC
Sumchanka from Ukraine in their second match of the day.
After a goalless first half, Wanderers took the initiative with a
quality deflection from Julie Bryce but within two minutes the
Ukrainians were level, Carmin Dow faced two attackers and the ball
eventually trundled over the line before Becky Ward could reach
it.

Although the Taysiders created chances from both open play and
penalty corners, it was Sumchanka who took a 2-1 lead on the
break.  Coach Dave Stott took the chance of taking off keeper
Carmin Dow in the attempt to rescue a draw but the extra outfield
player failed to provide the illusive equalising goal.

Stott said:  “I was pleased with the effort put in by all
the players, but we were lacking in sharpness and experience needed
for this level of competition.”
