Western falter in the Men’s Premiership but no change in the Women’s
Totally out of character Western let it slip against Clydesdale at Auchenhowie, the equaliser came with barely ten seconds left with a deflected goal from Ali Douglas for a share of the points.
There was no hint of the unexpected when a hat-trick by Andrew McConnell put Western a comfortable three up early in the second half. Then the wheels came off, Ali Douglas pulled the score back to 3-1 but there still seemed no danger to Western`s hegemony. Then Jack McKenzie won a penalty and David Nairn converted from the spot for 3-2 – and game on!
In the dramatic denouement Douglas deflected in for a belated share of the points.
The result was good news for second placed Grange who are now only five points adrift at the top after a stunning 8-1 win over Dunfermline Carnegie in Fife.
The league`s top striker Fraser Heigh was in form with four, Albert Rowling got a couple while Matt Murphy and John McCluskey were also on target. Cameron Scott got the Fifers consolation with a flick over the keeper.
Edinburgh University consolidated their third place with a 3-2 win over Watsonians, Guy Rowson, Keir Robb and Robbie Croll were the students` scorers and Patrick Ridge and Dan Coultas replied for Watsonians.
In the lower part of the Premiership Uddingston continued their good work with a 5-1 win at Menzieshill. Jonny McDonald and Finn Halliday provided the foundation with two in the first quarter. Alex McGregor added another before the interval. In the second half two further goals were added by Jacky Tran and Ben Wilson.
Hillhead also continued their winning run at the expense of Kelburne with a 4-0 victory. The goals came from Matt Carder, Jimmy Lynch Small, Andrew Black and Fraser Ward.
At the foot Dundee Wanderers gained an extra point over bottom side Menzieshill after a 1-1 draw at Inverleith, Xavax Cordero was their scorer.
Rather predictably there was no change at the top of the women`s Premiership with Clydesdale Western 4-0 winners over Hillhead, and still in pole position. The goals came from Bronwyn Shields, Fiona Semple, Laura Paul and Heather O`Brien.
Watsonians kept in touch after a 3-0 win at GHK, a double from Emily Dark and the other from Sarah McKay did the damage, although defender Sophie Aitchison, keeper Ali Westwood and midfielder Lucy Williamson were mentioned in the GHK dispatches.
A 7-1 win over Wildcats at Peffermill kept Edinburgh University firmly in third spot, there were two goals each for Amy Costello and Georgia Jones while Amy Brodie, Eve Pearson and Katie Swanson were also scorers. Megan Cox replied for the Wildcats.
Glasgow University took over pole position in the lower tier of the Premiership, they are on the same points as Uddingston but with a better goal difference after beating Erskine Stewarts Melville 8-1. The students were in total command throughout, aided by an injury to ESM`s keeper and a hat-trick from Lucy Smith.
Uddingston went to Tayside and came away with a 3-0 win over Dundee Wanderers, the second quarter was crucial with goals from Emma Worthington and Sophie Ross. Erin Dearie got a third for the Lanarkshire side in the final quarter and although the score line may have flattered Uddingston Wanderers failed to take their chances to make a contest of it.
Gordonians pulled themselves away from the relegation zone into ninth spot after a 3-1 win over Grove. The opener came from a composed reverse stick shot from Gracie Gray Giles, and the same player added a second after good build-up work from Anna Warnock and Ailsa Phimister. Gordonians` third emanated from a penalty corner conversion by Heather Howie.
