Western draw level with Inverleith at the top of the men’s indoor table

Western Wildcats men kept their unbeaten record with a narrow 3-1 win over Grove Menzieshill in the first game of the day – described by Western coach Vishal Marwaha as “a little scrappy”.

Not much to show for the first half – it ended goalless. But a reverse flick from Western`s top striker Andrew McConnell broke the deadlock. The second came from a kick-out by keeper Gavin Sommerville which eventually found its way to Andrew McAllister and he finished at the back post.

The Taysiders pulled one back from Ross McPherson but succumbed to a third from a Western breakaway and Fraser Moran took advantage of Grove Menzieshill having replaced their keeper with a sixth outfield player for a 3-1 finish.

Grange broke their indoor season`s duck with a 7-2 win over Uddingston, but it didn`t look like that at the interval as the Lanarkshire side had a 2-1 lead through Ben Wilson and Luca Gardener, Pete Caughey replied for the Edinburgh side.

But the second half was all Grange – they scored five without reply, Caughey got another two for his hat-trick, Callum Lothian also scored two while the others came from Alan Johnston and Zach Talbot.

Inverleith are still in pole position courtesy of another three goals from Kyle Taylor – that makes 13 for the season so far. Taylor`s three came in the first 13 minutes and was accompanied by one from Keir Robb for a four goal lead at the interval. Two minutes into the second half Alex Wilson added a fifth from the spot, and although Bobby Ralph scored soon after it was little more than a consolation in a comfortable 5-1 win for Inverleith.

Dunfermline Carnegie retained fifth spot with their second victory of the campaign, they beat Watsonians 4-2. It was two each at the interval, Andrew Doyle`s two set piece goals were cancelled out by Dan Coultas and Danny Cain. However, it was the Fifers who made the most of the second half with further goals from Stuart Eadie and Mike Ross for the three points.

Grove Menzieshill were back on better form against Uddingston and came away with a 4-1 victory. Finn Halliday put Uddingston into the lead from the spot in 15 minutes but Johnstone replied for the Taysiders on the stroke of half-time. The second half belonged to the Taysiders with further goals from Messrs Cuthill, Knight and Chapman.

In Game 6 Western continued their unbeaten run with a 6-2 win over Grange. The game was effectively over in five minutes when Andrew Lochrin, Hamish Galt and a double from Andrew McConnell put Western four up. Later in the half Fraser Moran added a fifth while Duncan Riddell replied for Grange. Riddell added another in the second early in the second half but Western`s Adam Mackenzie made it 6-2 in the final three minutes.

Perhaps the closest game of the day was between Watsonians and Dundee Wanderers with the latter emerging 5-4 winners in the end of a ding-dong encounter. Guy Rowson scored twice for Watsonians in the first half and in the second Dan Coultas got a double from set pieces but Wanderers scored one more on the day through Sean Dowie, a double from Bobby Ralph and the others came from Messrs Gibb and Wright.

Inverleith kept their winning sequence with a 4-1 win over Dunfermline Carnegie in their second match of the day, Kyle Taylor was again in goal scoring mode with a double in the first half. Captain Stephen Dick scored from a penalty corner after the interval while Alex Wilson was again lethal from the spot. Dunfermline`s goal was scored by Neil Robertson in the first half.

Western drew level with Inverleith on 15 points with a comfortable 6-1 victory over fourth placed Dundee Wanderers in their third contest of the day. It was only 2-1 at half-time, Adam Mackenzie put Western ahead, four minutes later Bobby Ralph levelled and then Andrew McConnell put the Auchenhowie side ahead again.

However, the second half was one-way traffic on the scoring front with further Western goals from McConnell again with a double, Joe McConnell got one while Fraser Moran finished with a few minutes to go.

The last game of the day produced the most goals as Watsonians beat Grange 8-5 to gain their first points of the season.

Finally, the accolade of the day should perhaps go to the TD Kerry Nicol, who oversaw ten games and various challenges along the way – well done!
