Western and Grove clash at Bells
Something will have to give at the top when Milne Craig
Western and Grove Menzieshill clash in the game of the day in the
Subway indoor national league. Western coach Neil
Menzies believes that his young side have matured sufficiently to
make a real challenge, and the Grove encounter will be the first
real test.
“Last year Grove gave us two extremely competitive games and I
would see this season to be no different. There are some
changes to their line-up this year, but I would expect their usual
disciplined and hard working approach. I believe that should
we manage the level of play we achieved in the second half of the
CALA game, then we are certainly capable of winning,” said
Menzies.
Western scored at will in an 11-3 defeat of CALA Edinburgh last
week, Anna-Mae Morton notched a hat-trick and there were doubles
for Fiona Bruce, Kareena Marshall and Susan McGilveray, similar
sharp shooting could test the Grove defence.
Menzies will be without international defender Catriona Ralph
due to a hand injury, but in compensation Nicki Skrastin is back
after missing last week due to exams. Western`s defence has
been stabilised by the return of goalkeeper Amy Gibson, she missed
all last indoor season due to a serious leg injury.
Kat Cameron, Grove`s captain, emphasised the great rivalry
between the clubs and was wary of the euphoria of the
occasion. “For us it`s important to stick to process
and not get caught up in the hype. On paper they are the more
experienced indoor side, but it`s all about who creates and takes
the most chances.”
Cameron was content with the six points last weekend, but
stressed that there was a big improvement in the second game where
the Taysiders defeated Clydesdale 10-1, there was a hat-trick for
Louise Baxter and two goals each from Linda Clement, Ailsa Wyllie
and Ali Bell. More of the same against Western is what
Cameron is expecting of her charges.
Both sides should approach the clash with full points, Western
start the day against Grove`s second string while the Dundonians
should see off newly promoted Granite City Wanderers.
VWS Dundee Wanderers, now officially in search of a coach to
replace Iain Strachan who departed a couple of weeks ago, are in
line to advance their cause of retaining the championship with
victories over Clydesdale and then Kelburne. However,
the Paisley side may not be a foregone conclusion as they sit in
fourth place with a win and a draw under their belt from the
opening fixtures.
The remaining sides in the division will start to jostle for
precious points as Clydesdale, Grove A, Granite City Wanderers and
CALA Edinburgh play each other over the day`s programme.
