Weekend Preview: Women’s National Indoor League

It’s an important weekend of hockey action as the Women’s National Indoor League programme reaches the final stages of the season.

National Indoor League Division 1 – Forthbank, Stirling

Dundee Wanderers are in pole position to retain their title courtesy of being five points clear of second place Grove Menzieshill as the National Indoor League Division 1 season reaches its climax at Bell’s Sports Centre, Perth on Sunday.
The city rivals go head-to-head in the last match of the day at 6.15pm but it could all be academic if Wanderers continue their blistering form this season by beating both Reid Kerr College Kelburne and CALA Edinburgh in their first two matches.
Grove Menzieshill will need one of these sides to do them a favour, in addition to securing maximum points from their fixtures against Inverleith and Milne Craig Clydesdale Western, if the destination of the championship is to go to a decider.
The battle to avoid relegation at the bottom of the league is equally intense with Reid Kerr College Kelburne, Inverleith and Granite City Wanderers all within three points of each other. With the three teams so close on points, it could all come down to goal difference.
Kelburne vs. Granite City Wanderers is a crucial match and a win for either side could go a long way to sealing the fate of the losing team. Meanwhile, if Inverleith are to escape relegation, they will be targeting a win against Western Wildcats in their second match.
Elsewhere, CALA Edinburgh, Milne Craig Clydesdale Western and Western Wildcats are all in contention to qualify for the European play-offs at the Indoor Gala Day on Saturday 9 February. The Edinburgh side are favourites to seal third place, leaving the two Glasgow rivals to fight it out for the final play-off spot.
In the Midland & North Division, Grove Menzieshill A are the firm favourites to claim the league title by virtue of a six point lead and vastly superior goal difference over second place Perthshire.
The two sides will face each other during Sunday’s session at DISC, with the Dundee outfit only requiring a point to win the league. Should they lose, they have a second bite at the cherry against Stirling Wanderers. Perthshire can still finish second if they beat Dundee Wanderers II, although Stirling Wanderers are in contention too.
