Weekend Preview: Women’s National Indoor League
It’s an important weekend of hockey action as the Women’s National Indoor League programme reaches the final stages of the season.
National Indoor League Division 1 – Forthbank, Stirling
The indoor season reaches its climax at Forthbank on Sunday with Dundee Wanderers in pole position to win the National Indoor League Division 1 title courtesy of a five point advantage over second place Grove Menzieshil.
The city rivals go head-to-head in the last match of the day at 6.15pm but it could all be academic if Wanderers continue their blistering form this season by beating both Kelburne and CALA Edinburgh in their first two matches.
If the destination of the championship is to go to a deciding match, Grove Menzieshill will need one of these sides to do them a favour in addition to securing maximum points from their fixtures against Inverleith and Milne Craig Clydesdale Western.
The battle to avoid relegation at the bottom of the league is equally intense with Kelburne, Inverleith and Granite City Wanderers all within four points of each other. With the three teams so close on points, it could all come down to goal difference.
Kelburne vs. Granite City Wanderers is a crucial match and a win for either side could go a long way to sealing the fate of the losing team. Meanwhile, if Inverleith are to escape relegation, they will be targeting a win against Western Wildcats in their second match.
Elsewhere, CALA Edinburgh, Milne Craig Clydesdale Western and the Wildcats are all in contention to qualify for the European play-offs at the Indoor Gala Day on Saturday 9 February. The Edinburgh side are favourites to seal third place, leaving the two Glasgow rivals to fight it out for the final play-off spot.
National Indoor League Central Division – Bell’s Sports Centre, Perth
Waverley Inveresk Trinity are the league winners of the Central Division, with Hillhead Ladies qualifying for the second play-off spot.
All four remaining sides will play the final session at Bell’s on Sunday.
National Indoor League Midland & North Division – DISC, Dundee
In the Midland & North Division, Grove Menzieshill A are the firm favourites to claim the league title by virtue of a six point lead and vastly superior goal difference over second place Perthshire.
The two sides will face each other during Sunday’s session at DISC, with the Dundee outfit only requiring a point to win the league.
Should they lose, they have a second bite at the cherry against Stirling Wanderers.
Perthshire can still finish second if they beat Dundee Wanderers II, although Stirling Wanderers are in contention too.
