Watsonians women win in indoor Euros along with cup and league action

EUROHOCKEY INDOOR CLUB CUP

WATSONIANS  3-2 RAILWAY UNION (IRELAND)  

There was a win for Watsonians women in their last game in the EuroHockey Indoor Club Cup in Turkey.

Watsonians finished ninth after a 3-2 win over Irish champions Railway Union. Always good to finish a tournament with a win.

But it did not look so promising when Ireland`s Amy Benson put Railway Union ahead in the second quarter and that was the score at the break.

Two goals in as many minutes from Sarah Jamieson put the Scottish champions 2-1 ahead early in the second half.   Railway Union were soon back on level terms with an equalising goal from Micaela Sanderson.

The game was poised, but an open play strike from Emily Dark put the Scots 3-2 up and that is how it finished.

 

 

 

 

SCOTTISH CUP QUARTER-FINALS

On Friday evening the ties went on Premiership form with Western Wildcats and Grange marching into the semi-final draw.

At Upper Windyedge the holders took the tie against Hillhead by the scruff of the neck in the opening ten minutes, firstly Fraser Moran opened from the spot in three minutes and seven minutes later the same player fired the ball into the net from a narrow angle to double the tally.

And that was the end of the scoring but Hillhead had their chances with two penalty corner shots coming off the post, but they were unable to make inroads into the two early Wildcats lead.

After last weekend`s goal shy performance Grange remembered their shooting sticks for the tie against Inverleith and rattled in eight without reply.  In seven minutes David Nairn, now back from injury for the first time this season, opened the scoring…and that started a procession of goals.   Dylan Bean from a penalty corner, Nairn again, Aidan McQuade from another set piece and Joe Waterston put the Premiership leaders five up at the interval.

The goal flow continued in the second half with McQuade again at a penalty corner, Bean again and finally Jamie Green brought the total to eight.

Perhaps the result of the round was at Titwood where bottom of the Premiership Kelburne pulled off a 2-1 win against Clydesdale.   Clydesdale`s Andrew Allan and Dylan Bradley of Kelburne exchanged goals, and it looked as if the tie was heading for a shoot-out.   Then up stepped teenager Tommy Austin to smack home a last second penalty corner for a dramatic winner.

Watsonians are the fourth side to enter the semi-final draw but only after a shoot-out 5-3win over Grove Menzieshill, and that after a 2-2 draw in normal time.    Jack Cahalin scored twice to give Watsonians a two goal lead at the interval.     Then the Taysiders retaliated, Luke Cranney smashed the ball across the circle for Jamie Spratt to tap in.   The equaliser came from an aerial ball which was controlled by Alfie Bonnar and promptly smashed into the net.     However, in the shoot -out all Watsonians – Dan Coultas, Duncan Riddell, Danny Cain, Max Johnstone and for the winner Jack Cahalin were on target to win 5-3.

The women`s cup quarter finals were fairly straight forward.   Clydesdale Western were 4-0 winners over Hiullhead, scorers here were Ava Graham, Heather O`Brien, Millie Steiger and Emma Murray.

Uddingston progressed into the semi-final draw with the same score over second tier Edinburgh HC and their scorers were D`Arcey Campbell, Amelia Muir, Lexi Macmillan and Olivia Mullen.

Western Wildcats were also winners, 2-1 over Glasgow University.  Lexi Sabatelli put the Cats ahead in the first quarter but the students retaliated with an equaliser from Ciara Forgie.   But after some sustained pressure Emma McDiarmid snatched the winner and a place in the semi-finals.

PREMIERSHIP

In the woman`s Premiership Edinburgh University moved up from fifth to second after a 7-1 win over the St Andrews students.    Jika Nyirenda was top scorer with a hat-trick while Ava Findlay, Harriett Platt, Hariett Bradley and finally Kirsten Murison got the others, with Julia Chapman getting St Andrews consolation strike.
