Watsonians women finish the first phase with a perfect record
The fact that Watsonians have finished the first phase of the women`s Premiership with a perfect record – that is played eleven games with 33 points – begs the question, who is going to stop the Edinburgh side retaining the title?
The chasing pack are a bit behind – second placed Edinburgh University trail by five points while Western Wildcats and Clydesdale Western are a further four points adrift.
On Sunday Watsonians travelled to Auchenhowie to face third placed Wildcats and came away with a hard fought 2-0 win.
We caught up with both coaches for their version of affairs.
Watsonians` Keith Smith said: “It was a close game, as it always is against Wildcats, but I felt we managed the game well and created more chances but Wildcats did create a few opportunities themselves.”
Wildcats` Kaz Cuthbert said: “It was a really competitive game, a frustrating result when we had our chances.”
So what was the action?
The first half ended goalless but Wildcats had their chances with a penalty corner saved on the line and another one producing a great save from the Watsonians keeper.
Watsonians took the lead in the third quarter at a penalty corner that seemed to break down, but Emily Dark found the net at close range. Wildcats then pushed for the equaliser, they even hit the bar, but with five minutes remaining Watsonians settled the match with a second. Sarah Jamieson went on a run into the circle and was fouled in the act of shooting, Katherine Holdgate converted from the spot for the three points.
In the lower echelons Inverleith were 2-1 winners against visitors Uddingston, the result lifts the Edinburgh side above Glasgow University into ninth position, while Uddingston still top the lower split.
