Watsonians men start their EuroHockey debut with a victory

WATSONIANS 3  WKS GRUNWALD POZNAN (POLAND) 1

Watsonians men defeated Polish side Grunwald Poznan 3-1 at the Club Trophy competition in Vienna to record a victory in their opening pool match.

And this is what keeper and captain Luke Campbell had to say, “Great to start with a positive result and definitely helps to get any nerves out of the system. It’s brilliant to have such a strong support with us and that really helped us during the game. We’re looking forward to a big challenge against the hosts tomorrow.”

Watsonians had hardly dipped their toes into EuroHockey waters when they took the lead, in three minutes they were awarded two quick-fire penalty corners and the experienced Dan Coultas found the net with the second. Seconds later it was the Polish turn, they had three set pieces in a row with Mateusz Sikorski sinking the last one. But the Scots were soon back in the lead with the award of a penalty and Charlie Jack duly converted from the spot for a 2-1 lead.

There were no further goals in the second quarter although Poznan did provide a penalty corner scare – so Watsonians took their 2-1 lead into half-time. The third quarter was also goalless although again the Poles had a couple of penalty corner chances.

But two minutes into the final quarter, as the contest still hung in the balance, Watsonians eased their noses further in front with an open play strike from Tommy Orr to provide that extra cushion.

Watsonians share top spot with Austrian side Arminen, the goal difference is the same but the home side top the group with more goals scored after a 5-3 win over Czech champions Plzen-Litice.   But the two sides have a head to head on Saturday with pole position the carrot.
