Watsonians finish with silver medal in Vienna
WATSONIANS 0 CARDIFF & MET 2
It was a silver medal at the EuroHockey Club Trophy competition in Vienna as Watsonians went down 2-0 to Cardiff & Met from Wales – and there are lots of positives to take from the tournament.
Firstly the Edinburgh side won the silver medal and they finished above their pre-tournament fourth placed seeding. In addition they would have won valuable ranking points for Scotland for next year`s EHL. And, not to forget, they won three of their four matches in Europe`s competitive second tier – that`s no mean achievement. And all that was achieved in their EuroHockey baptism.
But they found their match against Cardiff a much stiffer hurdle. After a goalless first quarter, there followed a crucial three minutes when Scott Rawlings at a penalty corner and Jack Pritchard from open play put Cardiff two up.
And that is how it finished although Watsonians had six penalty corner opportunities to get on the scoresheet – but this time no conversions and the gold medal drifted away.
So what was the overview – this is what captain Luke Campbell had to say, “To be honest, we are really proud of the performance level in general throughout the tournament, to get to the final and then to compete as well as we did with a very strong Cardiff & Met opponent, we feel we can take a lot of encouragement from that.
“The experience we have had will live long in the memories of all involved and having such great support from our families, friends and club members was outstanding. Let`s hope we can push on now in the Scottish Cup and play-offs.”
This season, and during the tournament in Vienna, Watsonians have had Sam Judge as head coach with all her vast international experience. This must have been a real bonus for the Edinburgh side.
