Watsonians bow out of the women`s EHL
WATSONIANS 0 DEN BOSCH (NETHERLANDS) 6
In the Women’s EHL quarter-final stage Watsonians were up against hosts and tournament favourites Den Bosch from the Netherlands – and they succumbed 6-0 in front of the home crowd.
The Scottish champions did well to see off the Irish side Railway Union to reach this stage in the competition on their baptism, but the Dutch were a bridge too far.
Watsonians faced the clinical finishing of Den Bosch`s Frederique Matla who scored five of the six goals from all angles – open play, penalty corners and the penalty spot.
It was 2-0 after the first quarter with Matla and Teuntje de Wit on target. In the following quarter the third goal came after four penalty corners and a penalty stroke, all of which were missed but in the end Matla converted a second spot effort to finish the affair. And Matla scored again from a set piece for 4-0 at the interval.
The second half produced two further Matla goals from penalty corners, and that completed the scoring.
Watsonians still have the chance to pick up further precious points, on Saturday they face Belgian side Gantoise in a ranking match. The Belgians lost out to Spanish side Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid 6-5 in a shoot-out after a goalless draw in normal time – and a result here would undoubtedly secure the Scots second outing at the elite EHL.
