Watsonians are women’s Premiership champions
Watsonians have been knocking on the door of silverware for a few years now, but last night the door opened and Keith Smith`s charges were confirmed as women’s champions after beating their nearest rivals Clydesdale Western 3-0 at Titwood.
And they have done it in some style… after a defeat on the opening day Watsonians went on a 19 game winning streak.
Although Clydesdale and Edinburgh University have still games in hand, neither can overtake Watsonians total of 57 points.
Any nerves were settled after Watsonians took the lead in only five minutes, the ball went up in the air in the Clydesdale circle and Mairi Drummond volleyed it home.
That is how it remained at half-time and until ten minutes from the end. With Clydesdale pressing for the equaliser, they were caught short in a quick break and Ellie Stott supplied the finishing touch. The result was sealed when Sarah Jamieson beat a couple of defenders and slotted the ball under the keeper.

A delighted Keith Smith said: “I would say that 3-0 possibly flattered us, we had to soak up a lot of pressure during the game but we defended well. But we took our chances and that was the difference.
“This was very much a team effort, we have a big squad and everyone has played their part at one time or another, both on and off the pitch. Everybody has worked hard for this success. But Clydesdale and Edinburgh University pushed us hand during the campaign.”
Clydesdale coach Derek Forsyth was obviously disappointed but praised his team on the night. “The girls played well but couldn`t create clear cut chances.”
Although Clydesdale seem to have fallen away slightly in the second half of the campaign, Forsyth noted the impact of the loss of four key players – Jen Eadie to the Great Britain call, Lexi Sabatelli has stopped playing while Paz Medina and Emma Watson both have ankle injuries.
A huge congratulations to Watsonians on a tremendous success.
